Driving up the A331 today there was a van and a camera with a sign saying 'DVLA car tax check', never seen one before so I guess it's part of the new no tax disc era, presumably a bill comes in the post if you aren't taxed as there wasn't anyone up the road pulling people over.

Used to see them in Swansea a lot. Used to have one going up the streets as well checking parked cars. Not a new thing I don't think.

Not new at all - they've been having occasional crack-downs for years, as well as the fixed ANPR camera network.

correct.they might not be new at all but one thing i was wondering about is what happens now if you have no tax but have booked ahead for an MOT (that does not require you to tax the car as long as you go straight there and straight back) and you get flashed or clocked by an apnr or dvlc camera on the way? how does this work when you get a fine or a letter or whatever through the post x number of days later?

Exactly the same as always used to happen. You write to them and say "I was going to/from an MOT pre-booked at <X> garage, and here's a copy of the pass/fail certificate to prove it"

Surely it's now easier to commit fraud.....scan autotrader for same car. Copy the plates and stick them on. Et voilà

What stopped you from doing that before? It's not like the cameras ever had the resolution to check the actual disc.

This.

The only difference between then and now is the number of ANPR cameras that will be running. They've been in the development stages for quite a while, but soon we'll probably see them on most A-roads.

The bit they need to work on is the length of time the database takes to update, as I SORNed a car a few days back and it's still showing as taxed!
