Following from a post on long term parkers in side streets, I punched details of one that's sat around a while near me into https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/Default.... Not taxed, , but it shows as
" A Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) is required for this vehicle" . Any one in the know advise as to what VIC is and why one is needed ?

I believe it will be phased out next year, probably due to the fact that it hasn't been particularly effective in catching the "Ringers" .

That is an understatement rofl !!

Not trolling smile ; googling reveals that it really hasn't been a success when measured by any metric (apart from raising funds for HMG wink ) frown .

I still have a couple of questions that I can't see the answer to..

Can you buy a car needing a vic check (e.g. from a disposal auction) and drive it around for a while before taking it for the vic test?

Can you tax it whilst a vic test is pending?

Would it needing a vic test have an effect on the insurance at all? (increase premium or cause cover to be declined?)

You won't get a V5C in your name until it's been VICd.

If you've got a V5C in your name, yes. Otherwise, no.

Unlikely.

TBH, given that the VIC is cheap and quick, why not just do it? Unless, of course, you've got grounds to believe it might fail...?

I'm considering buying a car that needs one.

It's about an hour away, so I'll have to go and have a look, and if i like it hand over the money, ring the insurance company and drive away. Without tax.

It being a shiny new car (everything is relative remember!) i'd want to drive it but my understanding is that if I want to be a good citizen then i'll have to park it off road, on sorn because I don't want a DVLA failure to tax fine (and because of the lovely continuous insurance idea although I will have only just insured it to get it home i'll have to uninsure it so I don't get a DVLA fine) until i\I can get it to the vic test center (Newbury is the nearest office from Swindon) at a time suitable for us both (they work office hours, I work all hours god sends so not that straightforward), reinsure it to get it to the VIC center and then assuming it passes (something I have no doubt about) i'll have to wait for the dvla to send me the new v5 so I can tax it and then finally use it.

Ballache central.

No, you won't.

If it's not taxed, it needs to be SORNed.
If it's not insured, it needs to be SORNed.
But it can be insured and SORNed, quite happily.

Surely he,d only want the price of the VIC check, £42 last time I had one done, your going to have to pay that anyway. On the insurance side of things some insurance companies want an engineers report on a CAT C vehicle before they will insure it.

Put a value on your time/stress. If he wants less extra than you think the ballache worth, then it's good value.

SCdan, does the current owner have the V5? If the car was written off whilst he owned it then he should still have the V5 and you should get the new keepers slip when you buy it thus enabling you to tax it.

When I was young and lazy I bought a car that needed a VIC check, I got the green slip when I bought it and the previous owner sent off the V5, I received a letter from the DVLA saying they had noted the change of keeper but wouldn't issue me a V5 until a VIC check had been done. Being lazy I couldn't be bothered so taxed it for a couple of years using the green slip, then the Post office caught on and said the green slip was now out of date, so I just taxed it online. I sold it to a mate after about 3-4 years of ownership and he sorted out getting the VIC check done and he was issued with a new V5.

In future I would never do this as it's so easy to organise a VIC check!
