A new daily needed, considering a Volvo!

Ok, just after some freindly advice here, I have currently been looking at removing the daily beater MR2 and the 944 from the collection and getting a nice new car for a daily, I was originally looking at the BMW 430/435 and the Mercedes CLA45 AMG(I was floating a lot more towards the AMG though), but with the new Mustang on the horizon and my love for it still strong, I decided that it would be stupid to get a new car now then start kicking myself when the Mustang comes out and I regret not getting it(it would be the V8 by the way).
So, onto the current decision, I do want to get a newer car than the MR2 to use as a daily for the next 9 months, over the past 3 or so years my DD's have consisted of a Mk1 MX5, Mk4 Supra, E60 525d, Impreza and the MR2, so I have been trying all sorts, but I miss the fun factor of the MX5 and at the same time, the laid back factor of the E60, so to tide me over till the mustang comes over, I feel a (not too old) hot hatch is in order, budget wouldn't be massive as I don't want to tie much money into it, so looking at max of £6.5k, it needs to be fun, but it also needs to have some refinement to it.
I have been looking at all sorts but keep doing a full loop back to the Volvo C30 T5, these just seem like excellent value for money, most are well spec'd with the gadgets I'd want and they all seem to look like a really nice place to be on the morning commute to work.
So, in summary, are the C30's as good as they look on paper? As they appear to be a Focus ST but with better build quality and more bang for your buck, alternatively, is there any other cars I might have missed that fit the requirement? and should I also consider a D5, or will they just not compare?
