am i alone in preferring the p48 range rover to L322 ?
Discussion
I love the classic range rover and the p48 but never really took to the L322, as with the P48 when it came out first a lot of the L322 had fairly small wheels ( considering how tall a vehicle it is)it looks a lot better with larger wheels but I still cant say its one of my favourite vehicles.
A late model p48 VOGUE or DHSEon the other hand just seems to have more presence and not have the footballer/ gangster image of L322. I know the P48 had plenty of electrical problems ( though L322 is free of faults either) but do plp think that its somewhat unfairly viewed by many people ?

From the P38 onwards LR have never got their act together as regards electrical issues.
The early petrol engines in the P38 had a well documented reputation for liner issues & to an extent this issue crops up from time to time although most affected have probably either had an engine replacement or been scrapped.
The P38 doesn't have the corrosion issues of the Classic, its problems are well covered on the internet & proper diagnostic equipment isn't that expensive so they are DIYable.

The L322 is a way better product than the P38. I'll not knock the P38 because I had 2 including a brand new one in 1995 (worst car I ever owned for reliability but that's another matter) but it's not anywhere near the car the L322 is. The L322 is way more luxurious, more powerful and better made. Go for an 07 or later V8.
The P38 is just as susceptible to electrical issues as the L322, in fact in my experience it's much MORE likely to have problems. I had a 2001 P38 which exhibited all the usual documented issues that you'll find on the internet, including once not starting because the two ECUs had stopped talking to each other. The 2007 TDV8 I have now has been utterly reliable since having a new alternator and battery over a year ago. It's got 120k miles on it now and I can be honest and say there is not a single issue with it, it's perfect!
Loved the P38 for bumbling around town at weekends, loving the L322 because it does the bumbling, but also does the 100mph motorway munching as well as my old XJRs used to. Fabulous cars the L322 V8s.

The P38 had the V8 Buick/Rover engine, the same as the classic and had that engine throughout its entire life. Are you thinking of the nikasil lined engines? They were on the very early L322's and were BMW units.

No. The same problem occurred with the very late 3.9 Classics. The 4.0 & 4.6 were the problems. The L322 is a way better product than the P38. The whole issue is very well covered on the internet.
I have owned both, and concurrently for a few months, so I do have direct comparison.
I know where you are coming from. I did post about this a few years back. I pondered whether a brand-new, issue-free P38 would be a nicer thing than an equivalent L322. Both mine were (are) V8 petrol Vogues (I still have the L322). There is definitely something about a P38, which is, dare I say, more "British", by which I mean, there is an intangible something about the leather and walnut which is just, well, lovely. The L322 is a different animal, you can very much sense the germanic influence, but that doesn't make it bad - just different. I love/loved both of mine, but I think if pushed I would have to say the old 'un had more soul. There it is - soul, I think perhaps that's the difference.
