So for the the last 18months I've been running a 2003 SLK200 Kompressor was a nice upgrade from a 1994 mx5
but I'm feeling the need for a change now.

Have been looking at Porsche boxsters, budget is £4.5-£5.5K

Is is a good plan or shall I just look for a newer SLK or similar.

Thanks in advance .

I had a 1998 2.5 Boxster a few years back 2007ish from memory. Loved it. Really nice car. They have their issues so go in with eyes wide open and do the usual checks!

Says the person with the handle "golfdsg". You couldn't make this stuff up even if you tried. Never change, PH!

Well that's not how you spell it to start with. smile

Fabulous car but £5k is the ropey end of the market but there's no reason you shouldn't get a nice car for that if you're careful and patient. It's not the most reliable of cars, but nowhere near as likely to explode as you'd believe from browsing the internet; still I'd probably want a warranty or the ability to absorb the total loss should the worst happen.

If you decide the Boxster is too risky, the mk3 MR3 is a lovely budget alternative.

I have an early boxster and have had it for two years now. It has never let me down but I have had to replace the radiators as one was leaking and the other looked like it was about to leak. The car is 15 years old now and I can feel that the suspension is well past its best and I will start replacing the arms in the new year. The air con doesn't work as both condensers need replaced and the roof switch is temperamental so also needs replaced.
I will be doing all this work myself but I still expect to spend around £1000 on parts in the next 6/12 months.

Pardon? Are you serious. A hairdresser, one of the lowest paid jobs in the country is not going to drive a Porsche. Typical lazy stereotyping.

OP. Ignore the hairdresser / gayer / girls car comments. The Box is one of THE sweetest handling Porsches made, particularly in S guise.

Prior to 2002, they had a plastic rear window, no front glove box and some other minor differences. I'd recommend a post "52" plate S - they are plenty fast, handle beautifully and are surprisingly frugal.

You'll hear a lot about "RMS" issues with the Boxster. Basically, it is the main seal between the engine and gearbox and can fail. However, it is a cheap, cheap part to replace when doing a clutch change, a few hundred quid if it needs to be done on its own at an Indy (the engine needs to be lifted out to make the change if the clutch isn't being done, hence the cost). A small weep out of the RMS is nothing to be overly concerned about - mine ran for 3 years with a bit of oil showing around the seal. The car was looked after by a very reputable Porsche Indy, who kept an eye on it and we decided to wait until the clutch change to replace it.

Asking the question as my knowledge of Porsches is quite basic, I'm open to advice/recommendations

If get a £5k boxter need another £5k slush fund for when the engine blows up...

In all honestly though these are not cheap to run I would want a minimum 2k slush fund just in case. I would look at an S2000 myself instead far more reliable/cheaper to run and still great cars.

I feel like asking you if you are some sort of inbred tt, but that would be rude so I won't.
