I'm planning a new kitchen and want to include a wall mounted iPad in landscape format for media playback and web access. I'd like it to charge while in the wall mount, allow audio connection to speakers, but also to be easy to remove for portable use around the kitchen.

Does anyone know of any products that would fit the bill?

These guys: http://www.launchport.com/products

They make some awesome toys, like the magnetic iPad dock, it's very cool, a little pricey, but very cool.

IIRC av forums used one on their build, so a search will bring it up.

There are a couple of different ones out there.

Launchport's are good, catering for most current shapes, colours and styles. The do one with buttons on as well now.
iRoom is another range, more in wall than on wall, put still removable.

Either are quite expensive but I use and like the Launch, ports and will be fitting on one our build next year.

Strongly advise against anything that goes 'in' the wall unless you have confidence it'll have longevity, which an iPad hasn't. Each edition is different and you can never be sure that the manufacturer of the dock will provide a replacement fitting to accommodate a new style.

As noted above Launchport is your product, they have just the one desktop and wall dock and are pretty rapid updating the caddies. Vex mentioned the new 'button' version which looks great, we've yet to play with this one but be aware it only works with Lutron lighting control systems, without which the buttons are useless.

Thanks all. Launch port looks good but does it allow a connection to an external amp and speakers?

No, just use a blue-tooth or Airplay receiver such as Arcam's airDAC or rBlink, or use a dedicated music player with App based control like Sonos, Heos etc. Connecting an iPad to a Hi-Fi directly by wire is somewhat clunky today and completely unnecessary.

I have their in-wall version (see here.... http://www.iportmusic.com/products/CM ) and it's great; iPad is constantly charged and connected via WiFi. It is also hard-wired into a multiroom amplifier. Although it is in-wall the iPad can actually be removed if desired, although it is a bit of a hassle and so better considered semi-permanent. You can change the inlays though so future upgradability is a possibility.

I'll probably set up a raspberry pi with squeezelite connected to an amp then. I just wanted the simplicity of docked = use connected speakers, undocked = use internal speakers.

Can you route all the audio from the iPad to Sonos? Does it do Airplay?

I would imagine so since it seems to be the default solution for everything smile

No, Sonos doesn't do airplay! You can only send Audio from the Sonos app to the Sonos. Unless you have a Sonos connect. Then you can route any audio form the iPad to the whole Sonos setup, but only through an Aux cable plugged into the iPad.

I have an iPad mounted on the kitchen wall that is used purely as a sonos controller. I used this mount.

Looks really discreet and clips in and out easily. The best part is that you hide a charger inside it, so the whole time it's mounted on the wall, it's also charging! Just drilled a small hole in stud wall and mounted the iPad mount over it and ran the wire through the back.

The mount looks nice, thanks for the link.

I'm using Squeezeplay for music and don't really want to pay Sonos prices. I think I'll just go for an Airplay receiver as I assume that will work with most apps?

Airplay works with pretty much every single app on iOS yes. Nothing to stop you buying a couple of airport express though and making your own multi room setup? Although I think to play in several zones at once you need to be controlling fro iTunes on a PC. Can only send to one zone from an iPad.

Squeezeplay does multi-room, I already have this set up.
