Uh, was it a live round fired into the ground?

If so, WTF was the officer doing with a loaded gun in that situation?

They were setting a good example to a seven year old girl, showing her that guns aren't cool and aren't toys.

Fair point, its Nottingham so the kid's probably used to it

Would have been headline news in sleepy places like London though
Or Wigan
Or Dunny on the Wold

Have you not handled/been around people who handle firearms ?

The worst one I witnessed was a young soldier who jumped down from the back of a lorry behind his mate in 1978, on exercise, blanks, bfu fitted, but he'd left one up the chamber & supposedly the safety catch on, the butt of his SLR hit the ground the rifle went off the force straight into his mates back, and the resulting injury left one medically discharged and the other court martialed.

These accidents are very rare, but they do happen.

I've never had one go off, but I have left a live one up the chamber and forgotten about it until I was handing it back in at the armoury.

It'll be interesting to see what they do to a Constable,(if we ever find out), accidental discharge was almost a guaranteed court martial in the forces, during my service, I assume it'll still be the same now.

There isn't too much point speculating what happen without any detail, all they have said is that it was fired at the ground
final check when when handling a weapon which should be empty is often to prove it's safe by firing in a safe direction this would probably not be straight down out the ground, but could be pointed at the ground some distance away.
There would be a big difference between that happening, and someone nearly blowing their cock off putting a gun in a holster in a room full of kids.

How many press-ups you get for that one?

Context is key. I've seen a young tom get knacked for £1000 on ops (he successfully appealed it mind) and a senior officer contribute £50 to the wive's fund after an ND on a 25m pistol range in the UK. Never heard of anyone getting courts martialled unless there were fatalities involved.

Yes, rather a lot in my time... But then I was taught how to handle weapons, to check them and clear them etc and generally not f**k up.......
