£6000 to spend
Discussion
Looking for a 2 seater convertible. MX-5 seems the only option right now due to me being 20 years old (insurance).
Had a look at some old boxsters, s2000s and z4s but the insurance is sky high as much as I would love one.
You'll probably think I'm mad because I'm going to be using it as a daily driver and I'm buying right at the start of winter, but the idea has grown in my mind and the numbers add up. You know how it is.
Are there any suggestions other than the ones mentioned above that I could be looking at? Or is the MX5 really the only/best option?
Also things to look out for when buying second hand?
Steve.

z3 1.9 - nicely balanced 4 cylinder car - and considerably under £6,000
(about £1,500 - £2,500 for one in good condition)
Some owners prefer them to the 6 cylinder versions...
or how about a classic - MGB / spitfire / etc. - should get a nice for £6k and insurance should be much cheaper...

regarding z3s drive a 4 then drive a 6 cylinder. The noise of the 6 will have you hooked

Bought my dad's SLK 350 for £6000 and loving it so far. Not sure what the insurance would be for you though?
Mate of mine bought an older 320 and loves it. Need to check for rust though...but find a good one and there will be plenty of change left over from £6k to cover insurance.Hi
Healthy budget, good taste. I would not say you are mad at all, many people drive 2 seat rear drive sports cars all year around and people have done for over 50 years….
I would say spend less on the car and take the hit on the insurance. I am still quite young at 26 and have had rear drive sports cars since your age, it would't have been possible without Elephant car insurance. Make sure you get a direct quote with them then haggle a bit.
BMW's are usually a lot less to insure than an s2000. Unfortunately the s2000 is one of the most expensive cars to insure. Quotes for z3/z4's and even Porsche's have always came under for me. I found a z3 was around half to insure over a s2000. As it even states in the Parkers review the insurance doesn't seem to change much with which engine you get nor does the mpg. So go for the 2.0 upwards (6 cylinders).
You may even get a z4 in budget, mx5 obviously being easily in budget. All good options.
I would definitely say spend less on the car (£3/4k) max to take the pressure off the insurance. It annoys me when insurance controls our lives.
Best of luck.

That's the cheapest on ebay and it's £7k but looks like a nice example. I paid £4.8k nearly 2 years ago for my current one though. I haven't looked on PH or auto trader or the vx forum.

Quite possibly started to appreciate in value..
Still looks like there's quite a few left. Kind of annoying how 'lightning' doesn't appear to have been spelt right, though.
