I used to play Quake II a lot back in 1997/1998 and since the source code is now available under the GPL I thought I'd download it, build it, and have a bit of nostalgia.

Trouble is, I've built it but it won't run as the resource files aren't included.

Does this mean that you still need the original retail version in order to run it?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers
Jon

Still no luck, despite compiling teh source code and using the map data from the downloadable demo.

I don't suppose anyone owns the game and has the CD lying around at home, do they?

Mine build fine from the source code using MS C++ Visual Studio 6. What errors are you seeing?

The code I DL had resource files in it (q2.rc and winquake.rc in win32)

It built fine too, but when I ran quake2.exe it threw up an error message about not being able to find a map file.

Actually it's all coming back to me now - I seem to remember that you needed a load of weird and wonderful command-line arguments or a Quake2 launcher app. Maybe it's something to do with that.

I'll have another look at it tonight when I get home.
