Wire/Cable to boot release

I was working on the car the other day and I noticed that a wire has come loose from the drivers side of the boot release mechanism. The mechanism itself seems to be fine and the cable is still attached on the passengers side.

It is not covered in the Bible - anybody know what the second cable is for?

Rich, are you talking electrical cable or Bowden type cable, also year of car and position of cable would help

Mine is an early car which has two cables attached but they are both on the drivers (right hand) side. One is for the electric solenoid the other goes to a remote mechanical release which is operated by the ignition key.

As you look at it from the back:

There is a cable coming in from the passenger side, which is attached.
There is a wire (thinner cable, at least) coming in from the drivers side.

The latter is detached (by feel).

To take the whole thing out seems a big job; what does the cable do - presumably it has a function, so will need re-attaching?
