The design of the LS2 is pretty much the same as the LS6 (at least they have the same headers and dimensions). So it'll still be possible to use a G50 or Getrag transaxle. The only problem at this time is that there's no way to change the programming of the LS2 ECM as the software is not available yet (like e.g. LS1Edit). So if companies claim they have a running turnkey LS2 they are using a modified LS6 ECM. If you want to meet emission regulations there's still no way (imo) to use the LS2. Just as an example: the LS6 uses an airpump which feeds air into the exhaust manifolds in order to heat up the cats after a cold start. The system is quite sophisticated and is controlled by the ECM. The LS2 doesn't have this airpump, so the system is quite different. I'm not saying that there aren't any LS2 engines running "standalone" out there, but if you want to use the new software for the LS2 you'll have to wait a few more months.

Thanks for the info. I assumed that the crate engine would come with the EC and functional software, but maybe not, so I will check this out further. Thank you for your input. On a related note, is there a header system manufacturer for the LS2 or LS6 or does it require a custom build for the Ultima?

I'm sticking with lsx's for the time being until more ls2's have been out on the road. I can't see the extra 300 cc of the ls2 being all that significant and there are lots of goodies for the lsx's. I'm not sure if the 7.0 version will arrive or not as there's been a lot of speculation about it. Is it a definate?

Post 1974 engine blocks need Catalyst convertors, which means a bespoke exhaust systems ... this is why the LS series in the UK is not popular yet
Most people have a pre 1974 block and aftermarket heads and a carb because of this ...

Is that a definate though? There's been a lot of hype just lately so I'm not sure it will ever happen but maybe I'm not quite up to date.
I do have some reservations with the ls2 and want to see how they fair which is why I'm sticking with lsx stuff for now. I'm wary of the siamesed liners in the ls2 and would like to know if they are siamesed right to the top of the bore or just most of the way. Compromises have to be made if the block has to remain the same length.

At least my engine supplier (in Germany) told me so. He receives his engines and informations directly from GM. He also told me about the "complications" with the LS2 (same for LS7) but is confident that both engines will be available next, no wait, THIS year (happy new year everybody).

Also, a 402ci LS2 short block (+ extras) can be had now from Scoggins for $4k. The stock LS1, with an Edelbrock LSx carb manifold and MSD ignition (for Vette coil packs) make around 410 shaft hp. Must be a fair chunk more with the 402 ci LS2!

I have been told by SPDC (Scoggins) that with ported LS6 heads (AFR 205) and the right cam (fairly mild) this setup will make 500RWHP without any problem and will have good gas mileage and driveabilty.
So I am just as anxious to see what transpires.

LS2 is def. a 6.9 or 7.0 ltr. have a look on www.corvetteforum.com/ and you can read about it, and the odler units as well.
if you want to build a 402cid unit then why not stick with the cheaper and more avaliable LS1/6???
you can use a SLP storcker that requiers no block mods. with other mods (on a iron block) slp turned out 580bhp N/A. and they offer a lower comp version (9.0-1 normally) and you could put a whipple supper charger on there to, to make some monster power. or do as someone has on here and turbo the thing.

As a former works (plant) manager and supplier to GM, I had LS2 engine blocks 18 months ago. I also recently attended a LS2 seminar put on by GM Racing's engine supplier
I too can supply all the components (kit) to get one running or can build one to any hp level you desire.
It won't meet emmissions for a 2005 vehicle though.
