Can't decide what car

A new job sees a new commute. I live high up, so weather might even factor into the decision. My commute is 12 miles, starting off from high upon a hill, down backroads, eventually hitting a town and going down pot holed roads (thanks busses!). It takes 40 minutes each way. I have a secure car park space.
My budget is £10k, but could go to £13k. I've been looking at 125s (coupes), or a Z4, but think they may be inpratical for the winter and uncomfortable on the commute, but fun on the weekends!
I then looked at Discos/freelanders and just can't see my self liking it and wanting to spend £10k on one!
I've thought about 2 cars, but in reality, when will I ever get home at 6 and decide to go for a spin in the fun car (I've a dog that needs walking).
The missus could get a 4x4 (she's quite taken by a freelander2) and I could take her car, a golf GTD.
What would a PH'er do?
