Which Turbo for 4ltr Chim, single or double???
Discussion
Hi guys,
I have tried using the search function to see if i can find out what type of turbos peole have used on their chims?
I have now bought myself a tig welder and now i have the MS working well i want to go down the turbo route.
Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated such as oil feed, dump valves and other gotchas. I am thinking of GT2871 but the inlets/outlets look a bit small for the plumbing thats already there..!
Cheers
Andy

Yep Daz, if you screw your eyes up and wield a magnifying glass, you can just see a hint of a turbo. This helps the OP how?
To answer the Q, you need to establish what the aim is in terms of absolute output, where in the rev range you want it to deliver, and whether you want to intercool, whether you want an external wastegate or integral, what CR and cam you want to run, and how you intend to package/plumb. Lots or options once you sift those variables and not all necessarily that expensive. Then things like journal or ball bearing core and flange types/sizes come into play, along with compressor maps and surge thresholds, whether or not to water cool etc. There is no 'correct' solution, it will always be a compromise, but the trick is to get the sweet spot where you can and will use it.
Key things to watch out for on a single in the same location as Daz's helpful pic are the height of the drain (needs to fall to sump level as drainage is by gravity unless you run a scavenge pump), and clearance between the chassis cross members unless you are prepared to start cutting and shutting. Annoyingly (and typically), the diagonal cross brace in that area is oriented to interfere with the bigger (cold side) of the turbo if it sits too low. If the turbine inlet is approximately on the centreline as is the obvious thing to do, then the air inlet to the compressor is tight (but still do-able).
Have a look through the 'what did you do in the garage...' thread since April as I posted up quite a lot of info as I put mine together. Happy to give some pointers when you get going if you do.

Cheers Pupp,
I did gather daz's picture meant something and answered my question somehow..!
I think i might be contacting you for more info if thats ok..?
I am a good welder/fabricator so I am not to phased about doing this...I just need some pointers on what to get in order to make a start.

Sure, no worries
This would be worth the tenner being asked as a first investment, albeit it is a few years since it was written

The manifold is by far the most tricky thing to get right

i was thinking something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/221416116634 as a cheaper exeriment. Use the original manifold and make a new 'Y' section mount the turbo in the middle and fabricate another section of exhaust to go from the tubo to standard exhaust so i can swap back to original if it goes bang...
How hard can it be..? lol
Hardest part i see is getting the oil feed to the turbo.
I think i wil have a word with Dom and pick Pupps brains over this..!

Some of the chinese imports are good but for that price I'd steer well clear.Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
