Funny whine, CV8
Discussion
I'm usually pretty good at pinpointing funny noises, and like to do so as soon as they appear to help avoid escalation of minor issues into bigger bills..
This one has me stumped at the moment. Car is a standard 2004 CV8 with many miles under its belt. All working well though.
This morning I noticed a new whine. It started when I started the car from cold and was just the same 30 miles later when I got to work. Checked the missus hadn't sneaked into the car. No.
It is fairly quiet and high pitched and the pitch clearly rises and falls with engine revs, sounds a bit like the sort of whine you used to get through a badly suppressed car radio in the 1980's if you're old enough to remember that sort of thing...
However, turn the heating & ventilation off completely and it stops instantly. Turn back on and it starts again equally instantly. No other buttons on the heater controls (aircon on/off, air distribution settings, fan speed) make any difference to it.
It can't be heard under the bonnet over the normal engine noise.
So to sum up, a whine that varies with engine speed (not road speed) but stops when turning the heating system off completely.
Can't really be heard with the radio on (even low) so I could live with it, but as said I’d like to avoid potential escalation into a failure of some sort.
I’m pretty sure my heating system hasn't been replaced by a supercharger, so any suggestions??

Definitely bearing related. Mine had an almost supercharger like whine, and turned out to be power steering pump.
The idler/tensioner pulleys on the belt tend to make some odd noises when they wear/dry out, and need changing fairly regularly (at least compared to the cars I've had before) - they tend to whine a bit too. Must change my a/c pulleys soon...... :S

Mine does exactly this. Should I expect to have to pay out for a new pump soon? It still seems fully functional, just noisy. It was actually not too bad as a diy job, since pump is high up on the engine and quite easy to get to - just took a while to bleed it.

Now just got rattly/whining A/C idler pulleys to change, but they are a pain to get to especially with a thicker radiator.

turn off the a/c and report back (so everything else on) it could just be the ac clutch or some s

If you mean me - It's noisy with the A/C off, and gets worse with it on. Can sometimes go away at idle revs after long trips, but back as soon as the revs build a bit.
tThe top idler pulley sounded and felt rough when I span it manually when I was checking before. Already replaced the rest of the pulleys and tensioner getting rid of other noises so the A/C ones are the only ones left to do, and probably overdue anyway.
