Hope everyone is good!

My poor 944 is awaiting the approval from the insurers that the repair work can proceed following a crash.

Two wheels are going to need replacing so I am going to replace all 4 with a new style. Not quite decided which style yet but I have a few ideas. I just thought I would get people's opinions on adding upto 18 inch alloys to the 944 S2? I read that it isn't "recommended" but will it really cause problems?

Ps. If anyone has any wheels for sale please post your images as I may be interested.

Thank you smile

The forged disc wheels from a 928. Perfect on the 944.

As you did ask for opinion's, and as an ex 944 S2 owner myself I would never put anything other than the original 16 inch D90's on her.

biggrin

D90s are great.

Just don't put anything from a non-contemporary 911 or Boxster on it. That never looks right.

Stay 16" IMO....17 or 18 ruins the ride.
I've seen 968s and some 944's on 18's...split rim stuff that look superb as an image, but as a realistic proposition on UK roads... just don't, would be my advice...
plus won't 16" tyres be les expensive?

Its been a while since my 944 days but from what I remember- 16"s are perfect.
17"s arent that bad as long as you have the 968 Castor bolt ( i think that was the bit they you needed to upgrade? )
BUT the ONLY 17 that works on the 944 is a Cup1 - and it should be an OE one not an italian copy because the copies weigh a ton.

If you want to stand out... 16" Teledials. but you'll need to run 8"s up front to clear the calipers.IIRC

Newer wheels on a 944/968 seem to be a real marmite matter - a few lovers and plenty of haters biggrin

I must admit, the Boxster 17s came on my 944 (fitted by the previous owner) and I don't think personally I would have put them on the car myself. I think I would of held out for a set of Cup 1s (which I think look awesome) or just stuck with the D90s had they been on the car.

The above said, the Boxster wheels have definitely grown on me since I got the car a few months back. I think they probably work better on the S2 / turbo cars with the slightly rounder nose etc (as opposed to the earlier models). In my eyes they knock a few years off the car, but then again, that's not everybody’s cup of tea. The car seems to ride just fine, but then I have only driven a 944 on D90s for a very short test drive, so can really compare the difference.

Anyways, here’s a pic of how they look on the car. I may still pick up a set of D90s for comparison should a set come up near me. One thing I do need to investigate is the 968 castor bolts, not sure if I have them fitted or not.

+1 for the Cup 1's!

I think they look sensational... so do Fuchs if you're looking for more of a Carrera GT style.

968 castor mount. Essentially the rear wishbone mounting, as per Porsche's technical bulletin.

A similar bulletin stated very clearly that 18" wheels shouldn't be used and PCGB asked Zuffenhausen about this for me many, many years ago (and before the tech bulletin) and the answer was an unequivocal 'Nein!'.

People frequently mention the 968 Turbo which had 18" wheels, but it wasn't a series production car...

Fuchs
I think they look fantastic on Fuchs; incredibly light and strong for the size, but I think the offsets are wrong for the ABS cars and original Fuchs are between £100 and £500 a rim...

FWIW I'd spend the money on a suspension refresh unless its been done recently. New Koni sport dampers, bushes and high quality tyres on the 16s will give the best driving car IMO. Later, oversized alloys on the transaxle cars is a well played out movement - thank goodness. A set of 16" D90s and Contis on my 964 gave me all the grip I could sensibly use on the road.
