Anyone know if there is an official rule on whether you have to have/display a residents permit if you're car is under a cover? I may need to put my car out the front of my house for a few weeks under a cover

I've stopped 2 different Traffic Wardens on the street to ask what they would do if they come across a car with a cover on in a residents zone, the first one said he wouldn't touch it and would walk past it as they are not allowed to remove or touch the cover, the second one said he would remove the cover to check for the permit

So any ideas ? Seems like no one really knows for sure

Thanks

I saw a car under a cover recently that had a clear plastic section over the corner of the windscreen so you could see the permit. You could try that?

I think putting a car under a cover on the public road is legally rather dubious anyway. You certainly can't have the cover over the reflectors of, I think, the number plates?

Until very recently it would have been illegal to cover the tax disc, too.

Plenty of cars in my part of North London have these with permits displayed.

Thanks for the replies

My point should have been clearer, was hoping I could have just put it under the cover outside for a few months without having to buy a permit

Wow!!

If you could do that every car in a permitted area would be under a car cover. Why should others in the street pay and you don't?

smashrofl

ETA. was going to say a lot of councils aren't supplying the actual permits anymore, it's all done on line, so no need for a window in the cover. But that's all irrelevant in this case.

I rather suspect you'd end up with a parking fine and a car which is scratched to buggery due to the parking wardens being none to careful with the cover.

I can't say I'd feel particularly sorry for you either. hehe

I have a cover from 'specialist covers' that has plastic windows for number plates, tax disc/parking permit + refelctors. It's also has security tie down points.
It's not cheap but it's very good
