Passed one of our boys in blue yesterday on the M74, parked on the verge service area behind a sign, speed trapping , standing partially obscured by the sign, no hi viz or hat on?
Are they allowed to stand at the side of a Motorway without a hi viz?

I'm sure I read on here the need for a parrot on the shoulder if they weren't wearing their hat?

It depends if he was letting a pregnant lady wee in it at the time.

I knew that was coming.

For what it's worth OP, hats are a big no-no on the motorway. And they can enforce the speed limit from wherever they choose.

They have a habit of flying off in windy conditions, or when heavies are passing. Potential is there for it to panic a driver into swerving or emergency braking. Plus, instinctively reaching out to grab your hat when stood on the hard shoulder is never good.

My old traffic mates would never be seen in public-anywhere - without a cap on (same for the rest of us) -whats changed?

Very poor. Of course they should wear hi-viz and wave flags for 1000m to let you know they are there and what they are doing so you can adjust your speed. This will let you do just whatever speed you want and stop those pesky boys in blue from hassling you. What could be fairer?

It really does astound me every time this comes up.

Rubbish - motorways have always been 70. Is it force policy not to wear them

You know what Bigends, you know best. Despite the fact you seem to have to question everything you would know with your past. No it's not force policy. It's common sense.
