Hi All,

Myself & the OH will be in London tomorrow and using the tube, I've got an Oyster Card for myself, and my Contactless Card linked to my TFL account, can I use both cards simultaneously? I've no discounts etc. on my account/oyster card (my mum suggested using her card, until we realised it had a OAP discount on it). Presumably they can be shared ok?

Rumour has it that you should avoid touching a wallet with an Oyster card AND a contactless payment card on the scanner. The scuttlebutt is that you can be charged twice - once on each card.

I'd love to hear from Londoners if that's actually happened to anyone...

You'll get a "PASSBACK ATTEMPTED" error. The system's got a redundancy built-in to stop people kicking back the same oyster card to use over and over (presumably with either a travelcard or in an attempt to hit the max daily limit and get free travel).

Experienced it myself a year or two ago, my dad's got the same deal (bank card and oyster card linked to the same account) and I'd borrowed his oyster card when we went into London. May have changed since then but I've had a passback error on my own oyster card when I accidentally buzzed it twice.

I'm a bus driver and have seen it happen.

I bet you say "Can I get" when you're being served at a bar too.

Is that when they're both presented at once, or one at a time? I have a backup contactless card we could probably utilise, but dunno if you *have* to register them.

Happens one after the other, in both instances the cards were buzzed within ten seconds of each other.

Bother, well, loaded some cash onto my paypal account and my paypal access card is contactless! Best whip up a seperate TFL account for that card. Cheers for the advice!

Or you could have jus used a contact payment Mastercard for today, and it would have been refunded. Same for the 28th November too, if anyone's interested.

Not sure what this linking Contactless Card to TFL account business is about. I didn't do that and my bank card worked perfectly the other week...

No you don't. They just work the first time you use it.

In my wallet I have an oyster and hsbc card with the contactless chip. If I put it up to the reader with them next to each other I get seek assistance, I now have to remove my hsbc card to get the oyster to register. hsbc card on it's own works fine to pay with

Well the backup paypal card didn't work when I presented it, so sought clarification at the station and they said I could use both the oyster and my registered contactless card at the same time, as long as we didn't swap them round etc. Seemed to work OK and both capped out at £7 which was nice smile

Thanks for the update! Looks like it's changed since I've been to London. I'm due over in the Christmas period so I'll re-try the dual Oyster thing!

If your wallet opens, like a book, have one of the contactless cards on each half and open the wallet before presenting it to the reader, has worked fine for me so far. make sure you get it the correct way round though!
