I'm currently running Continentals (18inch) on my 993. I need to replace the rears but I'm thinking of replacing all 4 and moving to a different manufacturer. The reson for this is that I've heard that either Bridgestone S02's, Michelene Pilot Sports or Perelli's (any) are the better tyres. I must admit I don't have a clue but what I really need is a tyre that makes me feel safe in the wet. Would appreciate if anyone could offer some advice.
Cheers
Bob

I love my P-zero as they've got really good grip on the dry but not so great on the wet. I did have a set of SO2 before, didn't like it much 'cos I found less grip on the dry and handling not as sharp as P-zero, better on the wet and lasted longer though.
No experience with the Michelene I'm afraid, they are the most expensive though.

Many thanks for the reply, I guess there must be a tyre that the car was designed around, maybe I'll try to find out which and fit a set of those.
Thanks again!

SO2 are brilliant IMO. Wet, Dry, Track, Road. Durable too.

Hi, IMO the conti's are great tyres, the pirelli's have lots of problems with block lift. the SO2's are also good, if rather heavy.
what do you want the tyre to do?
are you after long life, ultimate grip, wet grip or quiet etc?
unfortunately you cant have it all

Thanks for the tips... I would say the two properties I require the most are wet grip and low road noise.

If the tyres are N-rated, then they'd be designed and developed with Porsche's input. We have Eagle F-1 on wife's car, very good tyres, quiet, good wet and dry grip, sharp handling but not N-rated.

Thanks for the info, have looked around and decided that it's between the ContiSportContact N2 and the Michelin Pilot Sport N1. Prices vary but looks like I'll end up paying around 850 incl vat for the set of 4 (fitted), a bit steep

Seems about £100 too steep to me.

Bob, the Pilot Sport 2 is supposed to be much better in the wet than the PS1, although TTBoMK it doesn't come with N spec at the moment. It is available in narrow body 18 sizes, but not the 285/30 for wide body rears ...
www.michelin.co.uk/uk/auto/auto_produit_pilot_sport.jsp

I've run S02s and PZ Asimmetricos on mine - not much between them, they're both good all-rounders. S02s are 2kg heavier (!) per corner, but IMHO the most important factor for wet weather driving is tread depth, so you don't aquaplane as easily, particularly on wet motorways ....

HTH, cheers, Maurice

Thanks guys, I managed to get the Pilot sports down to £810 inclusive, I reckon I'm going to give these a go unless Jasmine Porchalink come up with a couple of rear conti's on tues. It seems the Michelins are N rated now (N1), check it out at www.etyres.co.uk/car-tyres-uk/detail?productId=4107. The tread pattern on the N rated one is very different from the non rated version.

Sorry that URL doesn't seem to work, but if you search the site by tyre size (in this case 265/35/18) at the bottom of the page you'll see both the non rated and the N-rated Pilot sports.

I did say there were PS version 1 and 2 ..... the one I referred to is PS2 - Michelin claim v2 were 2 sec per lap quicker on a wet track than v1 ....

cheers, Maurice

Bob - wait!
The Michelins are very very noisy - that and the cost are their downfalls.
Here's a run down i did in a previous thread a few weeks ago...

Pirelli PZero N3 - great dry, poor wet, ok wear, okay noise
Continental SportContact N2 - great dry, great wet, good wear, okay noise
Bridgestone S02A N3 - great dry, ok wet (but they get worse when they're half worn), poor wear, poor noise
Michelin Pilot Sport 2 N2 - wonderful dry, great wet, ok wear, very poor noise

From my experience on a variety of cars, IMHO

Hope that helps. If you want the best wet weather, go for the Pilots, but be warned that they are the only tyre i have taken off a car early (i.e. not worn out) because they were so noisy.

Oh, and you should be able to get a set of four, fitted and inc vat for £700 in a 225/40R18 and a 285/30R18.

Wow that did stop me in my tracks, I was all set to buy the michelins on tues. the noise factor is an important one as I have a motorway based drive to work every day. I reckon I stick to the conti's based on this info. I have ContisportContact N1's on there now so I'm assuming N2's will have the same properties.
Thanks for the advice, and thanks to you other guys for the URL's

Bob,

The N2's are a little better in the wet and last a little longer, but very much the same in the dry (IMHO).

Where in the country are you? My "preferred" supplier puts these on the car for about £670 all inclusive in 18" sizes.

Hope this helps.

VS,
Sounds like an excellent price, I'm in south east London, on the border of Kent. Where is your preffered supplier?
Cheers

I'm using Conti N2's on my 993 C4 (17" wheels) - A great all-round tyre in my opinion - about 500 quid fitted for a set in my neck of the woods.
