My son is ideally after a Tag Heuer, but I reckon that's out of the budget. I'd like to get him something he can wear confidently, but also hold it's value well, maybe even be a long term investment.
What do you chaps think?

Very few new watches will be an investment. A few will lose a bit, then go up because of inflation increasing the cost of a new one. Most will be worth half what you pay (or less) after a couple of years. Some will be practically worthless.

For less than £1K, the two brands that spring to mind for retaining value are Seiko (automatic divers) and Steinhart (Ocean models).

Consider buying secondhand?

I think it's more the name than a style he likes. What he's looked at tend to be various styles so I imagine it would be a case of something that catches his eye.

The Longines Hydroconquest Chrono (above) is a good call as is any of the Longines range. I am looking for something for my son and like the look of some of the Hamilton automatic range particularly the Jazzmaster Chrono. If he likes something 'busier' the X Wind range may suit. Worth taking a look on Chrono24 for pricing.

Another vot for Longines range, lovely watches.

Make sure you get some discount. Try 'iconic watches' for an idea of what you should be paying. a lot of retailers will offer discount but some really make you work for it!

I just picked the above link at random to illustrate the watch, it wasn't an endorsement to buy from these people. I'm sure you could get it cheaper. My advice would be to speak to the ever-helpful Dom Hackett and see what can be done smile

I think he'd consider anything if it caught his eye. I just don't want him getting something that just loses value. I know I'd said investment, and obviously that would be a bonus, but losing too much would not be ideal.

Realistically, no 1k watch is going to be an investment, as you're looking at low end Swiss at best. Make sure it's a watch he'll never want to part with, and the value becomes immaterial.

Look at 2nd hand if you want, but just buy something he loves!

Watches.co.uk have a microtimer. Fully digital watch a bit biased as i have two but they are a lovely watch that is wuite rare so likely to hold value. Only issue is they scratch easy hence why i have two. May get a deal as well.

Check out here http://www.pageandcooper.com/ for Sinn and Damasko watches. Both are highly respected German makers producing well-made, extremely durable tool watches, but still relatively little known by the gen pub. They have several good watches below and around your budget. Neither will disappoint.

+1

I particularly recommend Damasko, because of their superlative build quality, fit and finish thumbup Top notch watches, with a quality feel that's better than many more expensive Swiss watches.

Oris Aquis is a great watch for just a tad over 1k

As above, Oris have a few options around the £1k mark, and I also like the look of Sinn/Damasko watches.

I'm considering selling my Tag Heuer Carrera re-edition CV2110 (white face, Chrono with black leather strap)
Bought from new (box & papers) so it's had the big depreciation hit already (approx £3k new £1300)
