2011 e200cdi - 5sp auto - thud when going into gear
Discussion
Hi everyone, I've posted this in the wrong place so thought I'd copy it here too. I've got a 2011 E200CDI with 5 speed auto box. Car is immaculate, well maintained with only 17,500 miles on the clock. I've had a couple of issues getting used to the gearbox and this is another issue/question I've got for more experienced merc owners! now and again I get a slight/medium thud or shunt when putting the car into gear for the first time after releasing the hand brake.
I realise it's mercedes tradition to have this slightly odd foot/hand brake combination and I'm steadily getting used to it. But I've never come across this particular symptom in any other car.
I've read elsewhere that it's because there's some movement left over in the transmission when it's put into park/brake applied. Is this the case? The same people say it's nothing to worry about but, again, if this is something merc haven't resolved then I'm baffled. I didn't get these symptoms on my Saab 9000 from 1997... I don't expect to get them from a much newer, more advanced car.
Is there a particular method to applying park/brake to stop this happening? Say handbrake first, then neutral them park? Or neutral, park, ease of foot brake then hand brake?
Cheers,
Ian

Does this happen if you park on a hill or on the flat?
I have a 2010 E350. Procedure is whilst foot on brake having stopped select neutral then parking brake. Release footbrake and THEN put gear selector into park.
To move away start engine with footbrake applied, select drive, release parking brake and go.
If you select park before the parking brake and letting the car settle the transmission is under load as the car is trying to move (unless on level ground), so when you select drive/reverse there is a clonk as the load comes off the transmission.
Not a Mecedes thing, every automatic I've driven will do this.
