Omega Speedmaster Numbered Edition
Discussion
First off, let me say hello to everyone. Long term reader of the watch section but finally decided to join.
I'm relatively new to watches so my collection is modest in comparison, mainly comprised of Military issue (Army myself) but also contains few other watches of varying value and a Rolex Air King I was given on my 21st (was bought day I was born)
Anyway, question in hand.
My fiancee has offered to buy me my dream watch, I've always wanted a speedy, I love the iconicness and history surrounding them. On a recent nosey in Ernest Jones I saw the Numbered Edition, tried it on and instantly fell in love with it.
What's the general consensus on this watch ?
Finally ref their 10% deposit and 0% apr deal I feel it would b silly not too, I'd have no intention of selling and keeps my money in the bank earning interest, sensible idea ?
Regards

I wouldn't suggest paying full retail for it, no matter how long you may plan on keeping it for.
If your fiancee can round up the amount required, then she can save herself a bundle – https://www.chrono24.com/en/omega/ref-311324030010...
If it's only likely to be a reality if bought on credit, then I still think she's daft – better to wait until the funds are all in place.
As for the watch itself – yeah it's iconic and has some historical significance, but there are better looking chronos from Omega, and others for similar or less money, and that are less likely to be seen.

Depending on budget, I'd want a model with SS bracelet too.
Whilst it's true that it's always cheaper to buy a watch on a steel bracelet rather than on leather adding a steel bracelet afterwards, there are a couple of things to consider.First is that many people prefer to wear watches on straps rather than bracelets, simply because they find a strap more comfortable. I'm one of those. Second, and IMHO, the Speedy works better on a strap. Third, and this is a personal thing, I've yet to wear a modern Omega with a bracelet that I can get to fit me properly. (Except the PloProf that has a micro adjustable clasp).
Speedy on a random leather strap....

The Speedmaster is one of those watches that just stands the test of time. Today's model looks the same as the one Buzz Aldrin wore on the moon in 1969 and no doubt in another 50 years it'll still look the same. I'd recommend the standard 42mm model with which ever strap/bracelet you prefer. There is a 39mm speedmaster reduced, but these have a 'reduced' residual value as well.
The original had plastic glass because shattered real glass is rather dangerous to the eyes in zero g. One of the Apollo astronauts claimed the plastic glass fell out of his so he had to wear a Hamilton that he just happened to have with him on his moon walk. Hamilton were pleased, but Omega and NASA weren't and refused to acknowledge the fact for 20 or 30 years. The plastic of course scratches really easily, but I think the modern ones have sapphire or mineral glass which is much more suitable for earth like conditions.
Buzz's Speedmaster was 'lost' on it's way to the Smithsonian, so somewhere out there is the first and original moon watch.
Other strap possibilities include Velcro if you have really fat wrists, or wear a space suit.

£5k would get you leather, SS and a whole host of other goodies!
