Don't try this at home boys and girls

I'd not started my chimp for a few weeks so I though I'd be kind and give the engines a few turns on the starter before letting it fire up.

So I pulled the king lead off and turned it over for about 30 seconds, put the king lead back on and tried to start it.

Didn't fire (odd, usually fires first crank after the built it delay)!

Arse, I've flooded it.

All the plugs out to give 'em a clean and a dry.

This is what I found.



I pulled the CUX off and gave the engine a few turns to expel the excess petrol (and then left the garage for 5 minutes!).

I gave the plugs a quick clean with a paper towel and a good blast with the air jet and then stuck 'em back in.

Other than a few scrapes getting the plugs out and back in - no damage done but I'm somewhat concerned about the plugs.
They all looked the same with some light soot that I could scrape off with my thumb nail.

I took the photo when I first took the plug out so it's still got petrol on it, once it dried it didn't look so bad. Under the black there was a light deposit of light brown (as it should be).

There was an almighty cloud of smoke when I started it but I think this was the petrol vapour getting blown down the exhaust. It lasted about 30 seconds or so an then settled down,

Do they look OK or a bit sooty? She is starting to use some oil....

Thought there was a delay on firing with the ECU until oil pressure was reached so no need to pull a ht lead off and crank.

Good intentions but 30s was too long probably.

I flooded mine soon after I got it (I soon learned not to touch the throttle on start up) and had to take all the plugs out for 24 hours and it still had a whiff of petrol in the engine bay. Mind you, I'm not sure they were as black as yours, just very wet.

Without your preamble you would just have said it was running rich. Take one out again next Saturday and see how it looks.....
