Discussion
Good morning all,
My name is Tom, a 23-year old Mining Geology masters student from Cornwall. I am an extremely long-term lurker on here and seeing as I have a 12-page report to produce for Thursday figure it's about the perfect time to get signed up!
It's fair to say I have the bug seriously bad, and have obsessed over cars, tuning, motoring journalism and to a lesser extent motorsport since I was 15. I made the difficult personal decision not to pursue a career in engineering or the automotive industry and chose to follow something else I was interested in hoping to fund my 'problem'. Like any good PH'er this obsession has of course occupied the majority of my time spending countless hours daily trawling through PH/autotrader/ebay/youtube/evo etc. (familiar story I would imagine) procrastinating and generally wasting valuable time I should have spent studying.
Warning, the following sentence makes for hard reading. With a long commute and a small budget I have been daily driving a mk4 diesel golf (which admittedly has served me exceptionally well) for 5 years now. Like any self respecting petrolhead I hate it with a passion for being so criminally boring yet so damn good at being cheap and largely faultless but fear not it will go as soon as possible. I redeem myself somewhat with my project car, a 1991 e30 318i m-sport cabriolet which is ripe for an engine swap (m42/m52 anyone?). It is in fantastic condition, having been garaged from new and I consider myself very lucky to have found it.
Other interests include music, surfing and particularly mountain biking which is a huge passion for me but I suppose I should get over to pedal powered for that discussion. I also traveled South America for 6 months earlier this year which was an amazing experience so may be able to provide some help or advice to any prospective visitors of this part of the world.
With less than a year left of my MSc. I am also increasingly interested in the world of mining and geological employment in general so would appreciate any insight or advice into a industry which is giving a very hard time for graduates at present. I doubt there will be a large following here but have noticed there are many PHers involved in the hydrocarbons (oil) industry, in particular in Aberdeen.
Thanks for reading, I suspect I will be on here for a number of years!
Tom
