Hi all

The wife is starting to murmur about a change in motor since she got a new job and a pay rise. hehe

She mentioned liking the look of a big 4x4 to 'help her feel safe' and that she likes the appearance of a RRS. Or perhaps a D3.

Now, my head tells me these are not the most reliable of trucks and since she will be coming from an uber reliable qashqai, I pointed out a similar budget out her into a modern 08 plate model (is this 200 series?) land cruiser. She doesn't mind the look of them and if we could find a nicely specced one with heated leather, cruise and Bluetooth I think she would try one.

Ultimately I'm hoping it's still comfy/ wafty and as well appointed as the Disco, but importantly it's only worth it if its significantly more reliable.

So, knowing nothing of them:-

What's the D4D engine like?

Have they proved as reliable as all previous LC?

Is it as good a place to sit as the equivalent disco?

What's the waft factor like?

Cheers all

I have a RRS in the Uk & a Landcruiser Prado out here.

My experience withe RRS is that it is a very reliable car, can't comment yet on the Prado.

In terms of waft ability the RRS wins hands down

Discovery and Land Cruiser are not even in the same league as far as reliability is concerned.

The Disco has more toy's and rides better, the Land Cruiser is tougher and more work-orientated.

I know a couple of farmers that run these, after years in Range Rovers, & both wish they had realised just how good they are years ago.

One of them has covered around 110k in his 09 plate only had specified servicing & the only warranty item was a door lock!!

This hasn't been my experience and it makes me laugh how people slag off the D3 without having owned one. It's a big, heavy, complex car so will never be cheap to run - bits (especially suspension and brakes) wear out at a faster rate than they do on other cars.

My D3 has just turned 140k miles and I use it every day as my main car. Stay on top of maintenance and it will be fine.

The Land Cruiser should be very safe, seven airbags, traction control, stability control etc, but so is the latest Qashqai which has the highest score for occuapnat safety of any car that NCAP has tested so far, so she should be as safe in one as in anything else on the road.

It's funny how LR owners expect parts to break because its a heavy & complicated car rofl

Ever heard of a parts design life, engineered not to break in normal or abused use, or the term over engineered. In my long experience of owning several Landcruisers bits don't break, if they wear they still work fine. Not once in 15 years & several hundred thousand miles have I needed an AA man wink

It's a gen1 QQ. Worth about £5.5k. She's shopping in the £15k range.

I've had two LRs and one LC and only had the AA out for the LC.

(Admittedly the AA don't cover Libya so it's a draw...)

Sounds daft, but make sure she can see out of it. I used to have a Cherokee (not exactly a tiny Smart car) and a woman reversed into the front of it causing about £6k worth of damage. She hadn't seen me behind her & admitted she couldn't see out of the back of it properly. I asked her why she was driving a car she couldn't see out of & she said it was because it was safe......

hehe that's quite something.

Thankfully, if the Mrs finds even one thing she doesn't like about it, it's off the list! She's no midget so I imagine she'll be ok. But yeh, she would never buy a car without having been 100% satisfied in it.

They're a cracking car - I'd love one despite being rammed by one! The Cherokee (which I'd had for 2 months and was brand newmad) needed bumper, bonnet, slam panel, headlamps, foglights, wings, radiator, some steering bits and a fan thing. The Toyota needed a new spare wheel cage & it had a dent in the roof. So technically, it was a very safe car but a good job I wasn't in a Ford Ka.

The most annoying thing of all was we were on holiday in Cornwall. We'd got there on the Friday & the accident happened at 5.30pm on the Saturday. Trying to call an insurance company in the arse end of nowhere on a mobile with crappy reception was not fun when I had no idea where I was.

No idea what version of D4D is in the Land Cruiser (3.0 possibly?). But I have an 06 Hiace with the 2.5 D4D, bought it with no service history at 99k and I've put 24k on it in 14 months without fault and hasn't used a drop of oil.
