Just bailed out of a train journey from Birmingham New Street to Norwich...(dropped the Landcruiser off for further mods ,so have to take the train frown ). Took one look a the poxy 2 coach train that I was supposed to be spending 2 hours on and said ''no'. Rammed full of people; screaming kids etc. The '1st Class Section' consisted of about 12 seats all occupied. What the heck is going on? its a train FFS not a bus! Jumped on the Edinburgh train 1st Class without a ticket (which will cost me $$$$$ i'm sure) to go back to Chesterfield and them home, to the pub where I will have a few beers and sort it all out in the morning..working from home tomorrow..and breathe....

First rule of train travel - always reserve a seat.

I always reserve a seat on the quiet coach and it's always full of screaming babies and tts in suits on their mobiles. Don't sit in the quiet coach if it's you making the fking noise! Plus your knees are always up to your ears with the laughable leg room you get.

I did reserve a seat in the absurd notion that this would provide a modicum of comfort. When i saw the 'train' i looked at the seat from the plarform and saw the 'reserved' seat was surrounded by a pack of mouthbreathers and I said 'no thanks'. I was on the way back from Overland Cruisers near Ledbury who does all my stuff on the truck.
Currently in a pub in Derby near the train station planning my story to my good lady.

Who the hell wants to use public transport, the prices they charge for on the day travel you could one way hire a car cheaper.

I used to commute into London by train. On various occasions in the morning I took one look at the state of the platform crowds, late rammed trains, then turned around and went home instead. Life is too short to be treated like cattle. Eventually I quit to go freelance. No more commuting and stress smile

I've just bought a car which is in a dealer in Cambridge, but I'm in South Wales, and looking at trains to get there. If I catch the 5.30am train it would be 70ish quid for 2 of us, but the next train is 80 or 90 and by mid day is way over 100 and it's 2 changed and takes 5 hours.I can hire a car including the charge to leave it in the wrong depot, for 62 quid plus petrol and I can leave when I want and get there in 4 hours. Doesn't exactly encourage you to go by "greener transport"does it.

Definitely not. While I agree that some lines like London to Glasgow/Newcastle are decent and perhaps maybe better than driving you still have to book 3 months in advance to get a reasonable price. Like you said even at that far in advance the only reasonably priced trains are still at 5:30 in the morning!!! 9 times out of 10 it's easier to drive...

Actually door to door it only takes me 45 mins more (getting into central London to get the train takes an hour in itself) when driving up to Northumberland when I go and visit my parents. If I share petrol with some friends in London who are heading up anyway it's amazingly cheap and probably far greener too! Add to that changing at Newcastle then getting the smaller train onto Northumberland.

Had a another go on the trains today, great fun this. Chesterfield to Norwich then bus to Beccles - £79, managed to get a half days work in so it's not so bad. Will be using the Volvo runabout until further notice. Problem is I'm getting used to this public transport thing now, help...
