Whats the best PS4 headset you can get?
Discussion
I bought a re furbished Turtle Beach headset with surround sound, Id never used a headset before and I didn't want to spend loads just in case it was a load of crap. The only way you could tell it wasn't new was the fact that it came in a plain box. Everything was brand new on it, new wires and even that protective coating stuff ( you know that stuff they put on mobile phone screens )
I can honestly say its brilliant its a better sound quality that my SS system hooked upto my TV. Works well for gaming, music and TV. I would 100% buy another in the future.

Currently these are on sale. Possibly the best for the money at the moment. They're currently out of stock but may be worth keeping an eye on them throughout the day.

I bought a Turtle Beach PX22 headset for my PS4 (around £50 from Amazon) primarily so that I had a mic for Destiny. It's neither wireless nor surround sound but it does perform well and is much better than TV speakers alone (I don't have a surround sound system on my gaming TV)
It does have some great inline controls though that allow you to adjust overall volume, chat volume and your own voice volume which does help when you get online since you can turn down the game sounds in order to hear other people more clearly
It's powered via the PS4 USB port and it also has to plug into the TV's headphone or audio out (red and white) sockets so that has the result of muting the TV entirely. I needed a headphone socket extension cable though in order to work as on my TV it's round the back and the design of the headset connection assumes it would be on the front as the cable is so short. Less of a problem if you are using the audio out sockets since a separate connection cable is included.
It's probably not the "best",read expensive, headset you can get but it does the job. There are many others out there that will set you back anything up to a couple of hundred quid if you want wireless and surround.

How do these work? Do they plug into the controller? PS4 or TV?
Do these effectively mute all other external sounds (TV, SS etc)? This would come in handy, I need to quieten down as my partner is about to stab me with a kitchen knife with the PS4 being in the main room.
If you just want to play quietly (with no mic) then you can just plug any old headphones into the controller and then change the settings on the PS4 to output all sounds to the headphones (the default setting is just chat). Nothing then comes out of the TV - that's what I was doing until I decided I needed a micDo these effectively mute all other external sounds (TV, SS etc)? Turtle beach are ok but they're awful in terms of durability. Between me and the boy we've gone through a fair few sets.
Sound quality is decent enough on the wired ones, the wireless I found to be garbage thanks to interference.
I just use my B&W P5s now. Works well, mic is better, and I don't have yards of cable trailing around the room. You do lose the surround aspect but Otherwise it's a significant step up the n quality, suppose that's to be expected given they cost a lot more. Point s, just plugging into the controller is fine unless surround is a must, so you can use any decent headphones.

Ive currently got the base model turtle beach's for the ps3, the PLa's.
Whilst the build quality isn't anything spectacular, the audio quality, along with surround sound (the main reason to use a headset in FPS after comms) is excellent. Good bass to add to the atmosphere.
My point is that you don't need to spend £150 for a usable headset.

Currently back in stock but to answer the original question.. Astro MixAmp with Senhieser PC360 headset is the best imo. I've had it for a few years now and had no problems. Fantastic bit of kit. Saying that I'm not sure if anything has come out to challenge this setup, maybe the A50s but even they have a few drawbacks.
I've got a pair of the below, i got them primarily for BF4 and they are excellent, you can programme them for individual games to get the best possible sound. I've had various other Turtle Beach headsets and you can definitely tell the difference between these and others.

I disagree about the Turtle Beach headphones being pore in build quality. I used to have X33 (Xbox360 wireless stereo) and the only reason I changed was so I had headphones I could use on both the 360 and the PS4. The X33's went to a mate and still look and feel brand new despite being dropped several times during their life due to the odd "cannot walk to the kitchen holding the controller while the headphones are on the table and plugged in" moments. They sounded superb and were super comfy.
Replaced these with Turtle Beach PX4's (wireless and 5.1 surround sound) and they are superbly made, and sound utterly superb. So signal interference whatsoever and adjustable tone controls so you can tweak the sound how you like. As far as connection goes there is a small sender box that requires USB power (I have this on a plug rather than into the PS4) and an optical audio cable for the console. No other trailing wires apart from the chat cable to the controller. Rechargeable and seem to last about 4 evenings of gameplay before they need power, but the charger cable is a couple of meters long so you can carry on playing while they charge.
You can get cheaper but you do also get what you pay for in a lot of cases. I wanted wireless (to reduce cables) and 5.1 so chose to spend a bit more.
ps. And having gone from standard Stereo sound to 5.1 surround sound I can say without doubt you CAN tell the difference and it is MASSIVE. Playing destiny for example I can locate a nearby loot chest just listening out for the sound it makes... and I can tell not only which side of me it is but where it is (above, below, in front, behind). Same with enemy movement in MW3 on the xbox 360

Games have specific audio settings for it which are made by the developers so it sounds exactly as they intended. A few friends have them and say they're brilliant, with the virtual surround really working, uses it competitively on BF4 etc.

I got a pair of these recently and they are pretty awesome sound wise, comfort is OK maybe not the best but not bad either.
