High End Projector - a new choice...Epson LS10000
Discussion
I've been updating my house for a good while now, and as I'm nearing the end of an arduous road, and looking to move back in some time early in the new year, it's time to finalise a gadget or two.
I've already bought the screen, a Seymour model imported from the US, 2.35:1, with a secondary side mask to shut it down to 16:9 for sports viewing mainly.
What to pair it with. As I'm going CIH I've been looking for something with lens memory, so I don't have to keep manually adjusting it every time I change format. I'd almost fixed on the Sony VW-500ES as the weapon of choice - a close run thing over the JVC offerings, but went to a demo of a newcomer yesterday, namely the Epson LS10000.
Have to say I was rather spellbound by the performance of this projector. Uses lasers rather than lamps, with a life of 30,000 hours. Similar to the JVC in that it generates a 4K image by offsetting, but the 1080p upscaling I saw was simply phenomenal.
Very very black blacks, very sharp and crisp detail, no sign of any motion issues, and quiet as a mouse to boot.
Come on Epson - release the price for the UK, and when they go on sale, and put me out of my misery!

The Sony 500's are good but having just done an install with a VW1100 if you can stretch to it then it is so bright and sharp. Visually stunning.
Why did you choose that screen and then secondary masking? I the screen I paired with the above project was a curved 140" Acoustic Transparent with full lateral masking all built in. It is so cool to press the ON button and have the screen revealed to you as the projector warms up.
Should be able to get the projector to trigger the screen masking from the 12v trigger depending on the projection format, are you using a Anomorphic Lens or just zooming in and out?

Would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the Epson when you get to see one (if not already). Rumour has it that it will come in around 5-6K, so priced to compete with the VW300, but featured as the VW500.
I'm assuming the curved screen you paired with the VW1100 was fixed format, and fixed in place?
As I'm using the room for other purposes, with a TV mounted as well, I had to go for a retractable AT screen. The secondary side mask gives me CIH at 2.35:1 and 16:9. I am planning to use zooming, yes.
To give some idea, here is a shot of the room (very white at present, as it's just had it's undercoat). Screen will be mounted in the slot to the left, and projector will be mounted in a drop where the big hole is. Windows have embedded blinds between the glass, and there will be retractable curtains down each side also.

Yes it was in a fixed and dedicated room, I see why you took the route you did.
We fitted a 300 last week, projecting straight onto a matt white wall and it was good and bright, although in a room with low light levels. From memory the 300 has a very similar spec's to the 500 as well.
I am close to the Epsom HQ here, so I'll see if I can get in to see it for you and get a heads up on actual delivery dates.

Thanks Chris. Look forward to seeing what you can find out.
The 300 and 500 are quite similar (I've been spec scouring recently), but for me the lack of lens memory, and dynamic iris put me off the 300, and firmly in the 500 zone - until I saw the Epson performing, and it frankly blew me away. It seems to combine the best of both Sony and JVC offerings in one package.
I watched about 30mins of Oblivion on it, and it was brilliant.

I saw you must have been up to Al's place yesterday. How was the fade to black on this? AIUI the light source can be completely turned off for fully black scenes, not sure how it works in terms of very dark scenes with small details in though? Is it like a dynamic iris type effect (like the JVC X500/Sony 55ES)?
The only thing against it is that it's huge! Great in a dedicated room though. I'm planing on building a projector lift eventually, so I'm going to make sure it's big enough for one of these (or a Sony VW1000ES).
Is it a sealed light path on these too as previous Epsons had a bit of a name for dust blobs, but I'm guessing it's more like the DILA/LCOS light engines, so hopefully not the same issues as 'standard' Epson LCD models.

Sure was at Al's place. Went on Saturday, and could only spend a short time with him, so only got to watch Oblivion for a short while, before I had to leave. I believe the others put it under a lot more scrutiny after I left. A few comments on AVF have appeared since. The only thing against it is that it's huge! Great in a dedicated room though. From my understanding, it does indeed have a dynamic iris effect, although I'm not sure what Epson call it. The black levels were superb, and the parts of the film that were mainly dark that I saw (when Cruise falls into the cavern/hole) resolved brilliantly, with detail picked out perfectly. It's really worth getting to see him if you get chance.
As to the size - it is massive. I had already taken delivery of a PD3 from Future for my drop, but I'm having to go back to them and see if they will switch it for the PD3.5, as it's about 20mm too big to fit in the PD3. Fingers crossed on that one, as I really would like to make one of these mine when they come out!
Yeah, Al is a bit far for me to go (though I have met him at an event at Gecko near Newbury earlier this year). I was going to get a ready made projector lift when I bought my X35, but the one I needed would have cost more than the X35 itself! Since then I've put my TV on a lift and I reckon I could buy another TV lift to use with a DIY projector lift solution.
Not sure if JVC will bring out a 4K model at CES though (would be a nice surprise though, but not read much in the way of rumours yet), but since I won't be buying just yet I'll be able to watch and wait.

JVC must be close to launching a real 4K D-ILA PJ at the forthcoming CES show in January next year, given their reputation it might be
worth just hanging on....
Well, the house will just be coming to completion by then, so I still have time to change my mind again! ;-)worth just hanging on....
Will be interesting to see how JVC respond to the Sony offerings in that respect, or if they do at all. Even more interesting if they switch from lamp to laser, which I believe is the way things will go eventually.
