Ribble R872 vs Planet X RT57

Looking for some advice/ experience on the these bikes…

Started off looking at the ‘ready to ride’ Planet X RT57 with SRAM Force 22 for £999.99, then thought I want the full SRAM brakes and other slightly better bits on the made to order Planet X RT57 SRAM Force 22 for £1299.99… then discovered the Ribble R872 can be specced with full 11 speed Ultegra and nicer wheels for around £1500. Can’t decide which I like the look of better, Planet X is slightly edging it for me since they have an Edinburgh store I can go buy it from, it’s slightly cheaper and I think I’ll prefer SRAM double tap (still to try it though). Only thing putting me off the RT57 is the wheels and tyres aren’t supposed to be the best (FSA Team 30 and Conti Ultras) so I don’t want to waste money replacing them.

Any advice/recommendations or alternative suggestions?

Buy the one you like the look of, it will make you feel happy and you will enjoy riding it.

The specs are almost identical and there is nothing wrong with the spec on either. yes Conti ultras are awful but for £40 you can get a pair of Michelin Pro3s from Decathalon which will transofr the bike. You can spend £3k and still get gash wheels but the FSA team 30s are standard fare for that sort of price. They are not the best but then you are "only" spending £1500 so what can you expect? They will be fine for everything though, racing, sportives etc. Its worth trying double tap first though, i loved it right from the start but others hate it.

I'd go for the Px if you can get it from a bricks and mortar store, people have had issues buying bikes from boht mail order before so a shop front would be a bonus.

The De Rosa R838 and Ribble Stealth share the same mould, it may not be the same frame underneath but the mould belonged to XPace in Xiamen, China. I honestly dont think however, that De Rosa would go to the trouble of creating a new manufacturing process specifying anything other than the stock carbon (Toray T700), weave, resin etc for an open mould frame just for their entry level carbon bike so would be 99% sure that they are one and the same.

its quite obvious that the RT57 is a different mould to the R872. In fact I cant see anything in the PX range taht looks like the R872. I believe the RT 57 bears a striking resemblance to the Velocite Magnus but havent looked too deeply as I have been looking at OEM frames direct form the manufacturers. None of this makes any difference though really, the Chinese carbon companies like Deng Fu, Miracle and XPace make good frames and are often repainted with a brand name to suit the Euro/US market.

Apologies for throwing another option into the mix, but there is this... Obvious downside is the not being able to physically go and see one in the flesh before you buy. Great spec for the price though and the carbon frame will be better I would have thought.

I was originally looking at the Ultimate CF but the Ultegra groupset was out my budget... I hadn't spotted this!

I love the look of the Canyon's and this might clinch it! Although I was looking for a racey set-up but my plan is to use it for Sportives/long rides so that may not actually be a good idea and the Endurance frame could be just the ticket.

Think I've talked myself out of the Planet X as there is too much I would want to change (wheels, tyres, brake callipers). I can spec a Ribble R872 with Ultegra groupset and Ultegra wheels for about £1500 which is slightly more than the Canyon but with better wheels. Hmmmmmm

I'd go Planet X with full SRAM Force. I have SRAM Force on my defy 2 and I think its great

Its good that you have a local store to go and shout at when they miss the shipping date three times...

This is exactly the route I've been down recently. Looked at Planet-x then budget creep to Canyon and then eventually budget creep to Rose.

Under 2k for full Ultegra Di2 seems a bargain to me. Only thing that put me off a little was the rear brake calliper location but people have reported that it doesn't cause any issues.

You can get a better price than that if you hunt around and talk to people. No internal cable routing if the OP is worried about that. Lovely looking frame though

The Cannondale Super Six is only Shimano 105 spec for £1500, the likes of Canyon, PX, Ribble, etc offer Ultegra for that money which is why I'm swayed toward them. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I think I'm going to go for the Canyon, only downsides are 4 month wait (April delivery!) and the EUR/GBP screws you over on the Canyon site, £1400 on UK site but €1600 (£1280) on European site. I've mailed Canyon UK and can't get round it!

Building the bike? You only need to attach the handlebars, seat post and pedals. Anyone incapable of this shouldn't really be let loose on the roads ;-)

It's a long way/wait to send it back if anything's not quite right, and LBS won't be falling over themselves to assist, that's what I meant. Mate bought one, lovely, but cracked early by the BB. He had to strip it down and send only the frame back. Unacceptable to me on a several-k bike.

These things can happen, but it's not simply a case of throwing it back at the LBS or UK supplier.

Despite receiving the lowest votes in this vote I ordered the RT57! The 20% off code and local Planet X shop made it too much of a bargain to ignore.

Going to order some Campy Zonda's for it and stick the wheels from the RT57 on my Allez so a bit of a treat for it too.

Just need Yodel to pull their finger out and deliver it and the Spring to roll around to get properly out on it. Booked up for the Etape Caledonia as it's first (and my first) sportive!

You never know what you're going to get with Yodel but Planet X have actually just changed the delivery company to DPD according to an email they sent out this week.

When I ordered my bike 2 weeks ago I was told that the build time would be 3-5 days so with ordering it on a Tuesday night I thought I could go away for 5 days the next day and if I was really lucky it would be with me sometime in the middle of the following week.... Nope, it turned up 3 days later and as the nearest Yodel depot is about 40 miles away they wanted to get rid of it somewhere so they left it with my very kind neighbour who had to keep it in their hallway until Sunday night!!
Planet X bike boxes are a little larger than your usual bike box as you will probably see!
