Porsche Cayenne 4.5 - will they all eat their engines?

I'm thinking about getting an early (2005 ish) Cayenne 4.5S as a daily runabout. I know there can be a major issue with engine wear/damage, which will now effectively write an early car off (in terms of repair cost compared to vehicle value).

The mileage that bore damage occurs seems to vary - I've seen this mentioned on sub 50k mile cars, and on >100k mile cars. Is this an issue that's predictable in any way e.g. particular years being more susceptible, or is it an issue that would've manifested by now, if it was going to happen. What I'm trying to work out is what my chances are taht I'll have problems further down the line if I buy one without a current engine tick/knock!

Any advice appreciated.

I think the general consensus is go with the Turbo model. I had mine (2005 my) just under two years and have to say it was a very good purchase and handled all types of driving very well.

However both are suspect to the coolant pipe failure and can rack up big bills in just consumable items alone, tyres and brakes alone as an example.

Hi, had my 4.5 S for over 4 years now and currently sitting at 144k miles.... Car has been serviced annually whether done 6k or 20k miles rather than Porsche's recommended 2 years... I have replaced both the Coolant Pipes and Cardan Shaft in the past few years but known issues and still cheaper than a gearbox rebuild on my original car choice, Range Rover... It seems that if regular servicing and oil changes are carried out they can be fine and many owners in the USA on Rennlist have over 300k miles on original engine & gearbox...

Great car and longest I've owned a vehicle but will be changing soon due to the want for something different.....
