Always gone with protected no claims.

I have personal cover with AA, so no need for the breakdown.

Sometimes legal cover, depending on cost/how I'm feeling.

The rest I'm not usually arsed with

Well, if my missus gets involved she will take a reasonable quote to double what it says by the time she has chosen all the options, I just go for protected NCD, we end up with Legal protection and Personal accident, essential of course on a car that barely moves one renewal to the next.

Comprehensive insurance with no extras whatsoever. Over the past few decades of being insured it's saved me a fortune. Enough in fact to cover any of those the things insured against happening many times over.

Protected NCB, and then normally breakdown, works out cheaper that way on an older vehicle

Legal Cover EVERY time.

About 5 years ago we had an accident which wasn't my fault. The guy admitted blame, it was all dealt with and I didn't pay even my excess. If it hadn't been for the legal cover taking over, I would have been out of pocket for over 6 months. They were brilliant.

if he admitted liability and his insurance paid out, then what did your Legal Cover insurance actually do?

dont bother with the hire car as i have more than one car - dad etc would lend me a motor if needed

breakdown and that i get free with my bank account - its brilliant as it covers me rather than the car

Protected no claims and that's about it.
If I had a crash I'd just use the other halfs car.
Breakdown is cheaper to share with my old man.

yup, legal cover for £30 when every joe will provide it by just picking up the phone, for gods sake they buy your details and call you, so it's not actually worth anything. the worst con since PPI and extended warranties.

A) Insure the excess
B) Agreed value

Never seen the point of protected NCB, so I've never taken it, and having had a motorbike stolen this year it has proven my point.

No claims on car in 28 years, and I actually have a NCB certificate that says 17 years. So when I had my bike stolen (after 30 years claim free) my car insurance doubled. Another years NCB but it doubled.

NCB is a crock of st - it's pointless when the loadings for having a claim are applied.

I have no options with max (£1k) excess.

It's just a government box-ticking exercise for me.

You need to appeal this.. my car insurance company tried to increase my premiums after a motorcycle insurance claim. When I argued this, car insurance should not be affected by such a claim, the increased premiums were refunded back.

Things might be different now? This was 2009.
