Why do V8 S's still command so much wonga?
Discussion
As has been said above the rarity factor has a lot to do with it but also depends what you want? If you want a sports car for the weekend, for thrills the Chim cant compete with thw V8S IMHO. The Chim is the more complete all round car but with comfort comes less excitement hence why the V8S will always have a market. Also a good V8S will outrun a Chim 450 (proven) so you need a Chim 500 to be faster!
Long may it command a high premium! From the number of people that have sent me a mail asking that if ever I sell I give them a call I know my car would sell welll into Chim money territory!

In my unbiased opinion
, seriously, I think it unfair to compare the prices of the V8S to an early Chim. As already said rarity alone should mean the V8S will command a higher premium, supply and demand, plain and simple. Don't forget you are looking at less than 400 V8S's out there compared to thousands of Chims.
Slightly different cars too. Ones raw and provides and out and out fun, the other is more refined and a better every day car. I bought mine as a fun second car and it does that just fine
.
There will always be bargains but any sorted V8S should be worth around the £10K mark, if sorted S3's are worth £7K then perhaps more
.
I think early precat griffs are holdong there own in this area and there is no reason why V8S doesn't too.
Its all to easy to talk down the cars, but what else can you get for your money that provides so many smiles per mile.
As already said most V8S's will hold there own in performance terms with 450's so why settle for second best
.

According to Steve Heath's Bible there are less than 140 registered in the UK. With some of these being laid to waste and others now on the track or hill climbing, the V8S is becoming scarce. I agree with the opinion the rarity is playing an important role in keeping the prices up, do we think though this will continue or perhaps even increase.
Under £10k for a V8 engine is a complete steal, they are practically giving them away.

Well mine's been for sale for a fortnight now and not had anyone serious about buying it .. might be the time of the year or maybe it's track-based lifestyle is putting people off I have no idea .. but at 7500 I thought it wasn't overpriced.
When I bought it i really wanted a Griff but couldn't afford one. I never even considered the Chim, don't like the looks and they're waaay too common. Chances are at every TVR meet Chims outnumber everything else 3 to 1. How many V8S do you see? not many
The V8S also makes the better performance bargain .. lighter and lower geared so it's quicker, early Chims are slow and don't stop by comparison.
I love my V8S, I was happy to pay nearly 9k for it 18months ago and consider it very very good value for money depsite losing the best part of 3-4k on it including the upgrades in that time.

I guess this time of year people tend to be busy and don't have time to go car hunting, especially for a car they may not be able to enjoy until the spring? Just wait until the weather warms up, I'm sure people will be queueing up especially for such a well sorted example. But I think you're *really* going to miss it Joolz!

Well I'm willing to give it a go!
Joking aside, I don't think I'd make quite such a sweeping statement, but I would say that V8Ss have a small power to weight advantage over the other 4.0 RV8 TVRs, more direct handling and better braking. A well set up and well driven V8S can give some of the other nominally faster TVRs a good run for their money, and I see them do it routinely at track days and sprints. But purely in terms of a straight line drag race I think a 450 would have a significant advantage and a 500 would win hands down.

Ask ace-t and EmmaP what they thought of their passenger rides in my S at Bruntingthorpe .. at Oulton I've passed 5litre griffs and chims .. and I'm not a particularly gifted driver. Peter H has the upper hand over me though

My V8S and another PHer M-G who had a Chim 450.....? In a straight line on the A1 no driver error involved my V8S pulled away from the Chim each time we accelorated in the same gear. I wanted to see how much slower my car was than a 450...turned out to be the other way around.........
The V8S is lighter so in gear accelloration is superb, 50-70mph in fifth is apparently the same as a Lambo murcielago?? They are no slouch!

IIRC, when mine was on the rollers, I achieved a higher BHP than a 450 chim who was in the same day. So if the V8S is lighter...
