for my sins I was stuck behind a newish merc in stop/start traffic tonight.

The glare from the brake lights was ridiculous. I counted 9 brake light clusters - leds I assume?
Of course it was an auto so the brake lights were constantly on.

I couldn't read the model number off the boot, thats how bad the glare was.

anyways - cool story bro - etc.

I followed a BMW 5 series the other day with ridiculously bright brake lights, unfortunately it was being driven by someone who clearly could not drive at night. 10 painful miles of braking everytime a car came the other way, slight bend etc etc.

Amen ! Its not just me there are some truly retina burning OEM lights about now there really is no need for the intensity of some of them

Merc W212 saloons do seem the worst. Does it really need 9 light clusters to come on?

I think OEM lights on just about anything these days - front or back - are just too bright. Back in the 80s I used to go hooning round all over the place down unlit country roads with just a set of normal 50/55W bulbs in my car, and 21/5s in the back. I could see perfectly well. People could see me. I'd argue that you could drive faster on such roads back then too.

Now everyone seems to think that they really do *need* these ridiculous over bright lights - they're absolutely blinding, especially in rain. But so many people have this "I'm all right, Jack" attitude about them, you see them on threads on PH "they're superb, I can see so much better." Effectively "fk you lot, I can see".

Hardly, too bright means your eyes adjust & you can see less of what surrounds the car.

Are you longing for the good ole days when you could barely see a cars brake lights, and there was a chance that your car would explode when rear ended? hehe

Try wearing sunglasses at night time. cool

Not really as the majority are bright enough to cause discomfort to any sane persons eyes and actually make judging anything beyond or surrounding them difficult

^^^ Brilliant ^^^

Worse thing with Mercs, & I've got one , is the 'Brake Hold' feature. Put your foot on pedal hard enough & the brakes & brake lights stay on until you go to move off.

Hateful feature. Also I can tell how bad they are for the following driver if I accidently activate the feature because the glare from the reflection causes my rear view mirror to autodim!!!

How on earth do you "accidentally" activate the brake hold? Practising your disco moves on the middle pedal?

I hate webex.

Winnie the Orphan wouldn't have sold as well.

Would've done better than Winnie the bd though.
