As per the title really.

It came with 18" M5 alloys.

But I think I'd like to keep it original and a better ride on the standard 16" turbines, so I picked up a good set recently.

Any thoughts?

M5 Wheels.

The turbines on an E39s make the car automatically look like a £800 shed.

I think the 18s look alright, or at least they would with center caps.

The problem with 16" is that tyres aren't actually cheap, so that's one benefit of running smaller wheels out of the equation. I'm also not overly fond of the turbine design.

I've considered going to bigger wheels on my E34 but I really like the 15" BBS basketweaves, and 205/65 tyres are about 80 quid maximum for premium tyres.

Uhmm; looks like the 18's are favourite but I do like the turbines.

I might sell the M5 wheels; pop it on the turbines in winter and fit these in the summer (same as on my 530i) :-

Definitely the smaller wheels - the M5 wheels cheapen the look of the car.

Sorry but eeeuuurrrghhhhh yuck

Agree that the turbines would make fine winter wheels though, assuming 15s won't fit.

I didn't like them on my E60 either, they didn't suit the car but they might look ok on the e39.

I'm a big fan of BBS LMs and they would suit the body style of the e39 really well.

I'm going to replace the front suspension and lower it a little as it sits too high

The rear air suspension is being changed to less problematic springs.

Personally I don't think the M Parallels look right on a non Sport (facelift) E39 for some reason, I'd want some Style 42s, maybe in 17" diameter if they exist.

Turbines all the way, M5's look crap. Ever heard of a place called Featherstone? It's an old pit down outside of Pontefract (which is bad enough)

You look like a man from featherstone with those wheels on. In fact theres a man I can name who would love that combination.

If you want better comfort and cheaper tyres plus insurance, go back to standard. Plus you then have a choice of tyres that won't make you look silly in an inch of snow. Big wheels are getting boring now, everyone has them. Be different and go smaller!

I don't like the parallels at all on your car, looks at odds, pre facelift with SE bodywork and huge arch gap. Wouldn't be so bad if you had the Msport suspension option.

I had 17s style 42 which looked perfect but I would still go for the turbines, sure they look old but the ride is perfect.

Edit to ad my old e39, with Turbines, Style 32s and 42s smile

I prefer the Turbines. I like them and don't like the look of huge wheels on cars; anything above about 17" looks a bit grim to my eyes. The E39 has a good ride on 16" wheels.

Have you got a DC2 with a Speedhunters sticker on the windscreen?
If you have I've seen it a couple of times in Shell garage in Ponte.
