Beginners MTB sans suspension

I've signed up for the cycle to work scheme (which i've only now realised Halfords don't accept!).

I know nothing about bikes. Well, from my last bike i know that lighter == loads nicer to ride. I know that every suspension i've ever tried was utter gash and at my £400 price point i expect the same, plus no suspension == lighter weight. I would quite like disk brakes, my last bike had them and they were good.

Any good leads?

Go outdoors have a Calibre two.two
Halfords (no use unfortunately due to wrong cycle scheme) have a Voodoo Hoodoo which looks good
Islabikes have a bien 29er

Any others worth looking at for a beginner. I'm unlikely to be tackling a black trail any time soon mind...

I assume you mean a hardtail (only front shocks) rather than no suspension at all?

In all honesty I've never ridden on good front shocks, my last £400 bike is all I have to compare to right enough.

I figure no suspension would be best for me since I'm not going to get good suspension at this price.

Go and look at one in the metal. They are really nice. Hydraulic brakes! Crazy, but brilliant 1x9 gears. I'd like one myself, but already have a good mountain bike.

You say that but suspension on low end bikes is better than it used to be and part of the problem was people just got on the bike and rode it as it was in the shop, not bothering to adjust damping and rebound and then slated the forks for being st. Even mrspablos £400 Specialised Hardrock had some level of adjustability on the forks which improved the ride once set up.

Have a look at the European-centric brands at www.bike-discount.de and have a look at Merida, Radon et al, the Suntour XCM/XLT forks arent as bad as you may fear.
