Not for me (I'm happy with my M135i thanks!) but a mate of mine has managed to run his battered old Clio into the ground and has asked for my recommendations on what to replace it with.

He has a 100 mile round trip commute via the M62 for work so is looking for a comfortable, economical cruiser to munch through the miles without fear of epic bills. Budget is £6-9K.

Maybe some sort of lease deal could be an alternative but mileage might be a blocker on that as he's doing c. 20k per year.

Please help as my knowledge of decent diesels is minimal apart from stories of VAG engines surviving galactic mileage!

159 with the 2.4 20v imo - cracking engine, 159 is a lovely place to sit and actually reliable. More interesting than the german rivals too.

If going for a BMW 2 litre diesel then the earlier m47 engine is generally a lot more reliable than the later n47. They can be found in pre facelift (pre LCI) e9x 320d and one series and the five e60/61. They are good for high milages too if we'll looked after. My 57 plate e91 has 210000 miles on the clock and still feels new and fresh.

Others will be along to suggest a 2.4 d5 Volvo. Very comfy and reliable too if you find a good one, but I didn't feel old enough fort he image yet!

Late 2000's e classes also go on for ages too if looked after, and comfy for miles too. No wonder so many are taxis!

Volvo C30 2.0D wouldn't be too bad if he's after another hatch?

VAG 1.9 PD 130 is a solid engine, if a bit old now.

You could get a nice D5 Volvo for that money, if I was doing a lot of miles thats probably what I would pick.

Nice. If it was me I think I'd be seriously considering the D5 option. Seems like a lot of car for the money.

2005-2008 golf 1.9tdi. Mine is going up for sale this weekend. I used it for a 100 mile round trip for 3 years.

320d

I had a similar budget picked up a 2006 Audi A4 2.0 TDI S Line with only 46k miles for £6,500 getting 47mpg and is a decent cruiser however low speed ride is a bit rough. I would have got a E90 320d but would have wanted an M Sport and with my budget of £7k they were all high millage.

They are by far the best driving car for this budget though and meant to be pretty reliable as well for £8.5k get a nice 320d M Sport with sensible miles that would be my choice.
