Hi,

I picked up a tidy 07 Toyota Corolla D-4D up the other week. A nice car all round, very presentable and drives good. Also had a good wad of history and has had a cambelt and waterpump recently, its just over 70,000 on the clock.

Now I've never had a modern turbo diesel before, all mine have been petrol before. I've drove a brace of diesels at work some years back but they were all brand new so I've sort of forgot what a diesel is expected to feel like to drive.

My main worry is of the DMF it has. I might be worrying myself over nothing but everytime I drive the thing, a huge cloud comes over me saying DMF. Every feeling, noise or gearchange, I'm thinking of that. Stupid I know.

Why did I get a diesel, well I drive 35 miles to work (70 mile round trip per day) and my maths dictated a diesel.

I've noticed a very slight shunt type feeling when applying cruising power off and on the throttle 40mph upwards in top gear, is that expected given the mileage. Do any of your diesel cars do that?

Are diesel gear changes often rougher than petrols give the nature of the engines and torque through the gearbox?

Also I'm tending to avoid 1500rpm and below just to avoid lugging the DMF. Its not affecting the fuel economy, showing 57-58mpg onboard but that is to be verified against the fill-ups.

Chill out - I don't think you need worry. Yes, avoid full throttle at low revs. Gear change you'll get used to.

Its a diesel, not a Friday afternoon Lidl hand grenade.

In short: Get in, drive, service as required. Rinse and repeat.

There's a good chance you have a worn engine mount, rather than a DMF issue. DMFs normally see vibration at lower revs in my experience.

I did find it hard to read your post through all the 'DMF' though
