I'm aware of these new rules and possible fines for untaxed/uninsured vehicles, so I'm trying to avoid this by SORNing a car I bought yesterday, which is a small winter project

The car is taxed until end of Nov (I realise this stops as of yesterday), and the logbook was dated yesterday. Looking on the DVLA site, it seems I cant SORN it on the old logbook ref number, so am I ok to wait for the new V5 to arrive, then SORN it, or will I be fined doe to no tax/insurance during this period?

It's so confusing now!

I'd get a V890 SORN form and do it that way. Waiting for new V5 is risking a fine.

You need to bang the form in the post

If DVLA get the SORN application before the vehicle is in your name they send the form back and refuse the SORN application

I think you can SORN the car online using the new keepers section of the V5 / green slip

From https://www.gov.uk/make-a-sorn

"Send your SORN application (form V890) to DVLA. You can make a SORN up to 2 calendar months in advance by post, but if you’re doing it this far in advance include a letter explaining why.

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1AR

You must make a SORN by post if you’re:

- recently registered as the vehicle’s keeper and have received the V5C registration certificate in the current month
- not yet registered as the vehicle’s keeper"

And they'll send it back to you regardless of what you do if you aren't the registered keeper by the time the paperwork hits a desk - that's been my experience on several occasions - I might dig out the last letter and scan it in.

Having said that I'd still do that as it gives you a paper trail to confirm you tried to comply with the legislation (SORN) when they decide they have an opportunity to apply a penalty due to a period of missing SORN

I've left it until the V5 arrived and then SORN online a couple of times now, never had any trouble.

The keeper change won't happen until a day or two before the V5 is in your hands and the CIE stuff doesn't work that quickly!
