Sold my Boxster S this morning, 13 months of ownership and whilst a great car I decided I wanted something a little more wallet friendly and grin inducing on B road jaunts

Have a Jaguar S Type R for long distance comfort so thinking I should experience a Clio 182, ideally with the Cup chassis

Want to keep spend to 3k max and ideally need rear seats so no MX5 suggestions please but is there anything else I should consider, criteria are:

- fun
- able to do 30mpg on a long run
- fun

If you're considering the 182 then they not look at the 172 CUP - it's faster.

Civic Type R is worth a look; just choose your flavour for your tastes (EP3 vs FN2). It's got a much better driving position than the Clio and much better build quality, although probably not as light on its feet and as alive on a B road.

I would just say that I loved my Clio, it was a fantastic car and I would absolutely recommend one. It would also do 40mpg on a run not 30 (on 98+ RON though).

its a good choice... I had a Trophy for a while, one of the best cars I have owned. I would have it now but it made my wife car sick! fun fun fun, and surprisingly economical. I remember seeing 40 MPG on a steady run after I had changed a Lambda sensor. One of the things I like about these is they don't seem to rot at all. They don't suite everyone, but I loved it! Happy days.

Edited to say I loaned it to a none petrol head mate for a day once... after an hour he called me... he ranted on about how good it was for 10 mins!

Exactly what I was going to suggest, or a Xsara VTS and throw even more into fuel and tyres.

One of the most fun cars I've ever owned and I'm a real RWD snob.

That, a Clio or a type R (Civic probably but how much are Integras now?) would be my choices if I wanted a hot hatch. Anything from VAG won't be as entertaining to drive if that's the key requirement.

Do you want/need Aircon, cruise control and auto lights/wipers.
If so the 182 with cup pack is for you.

If not the 172 cup.

A motorcycle. They also have air-conditioning on every model, at no extra weight cost and it never needs re-gassed.

182's are brilliant. Loved mine, would have another in a heartbeat (only sold because needed a bigger family car).

I work for Renault and drive an EP3.

The 182 is a great car but very small, the EP3 is a better package IMO.

Looking on the classifieds; DC2s are about 4-5k, DC5s from about 6-7k+

May be some ropey-er (Is that even a word laugh) DC2s around for 3k, but may need work.

I'm looking into getting one this winter after my move to drive back and forth to work. My Genesis coupe is going to sit in my garage (if I am lucky enough to find a house with one!) due to the poor mileage it gets (around 20mpg on a good day)

I was in a similar situation OP. Recently sold my Megane RS 250 for something a little cheaper.

Just bought a clio 182 for c£3k, fairly good performance (feels much slower than the Megane probably due to the lack of turbo), cheap to run and 35 mpg hopefully on the motorway for the commute. And lots of revvy fun!

Yes I would rather have a Civic a Type R, but try getting a half decent one for under £4k.

This is more or less my scenario. I got a Clio recently to partner an M5 and I can wholeheartedly recommend it if it's fun you're after.

The usual applies about crap build quality and cheap interior but that's all secondary.

So.....

3k max
Back seats wanted
Comfort not needed as you've got a motorised sofa for long runs
Ability to do 30mpg or more on long runs
Fun on B-roads

Comes down to what you define as fun to drive on B-roads ( plus the sort of B-roads - twisty or flowing ) in the end, hot hatch, coupe, rwd, fwd or 4wd

Maybe one of the last 106 Gti/Saxo VTS and keep some of your 3k

I'm a massive fan, but I'd take a 182 over an EP3.
