The Widowmaker? Need GT2 advice
Discussion
Hey everyone - I need advice.
Recently, I got the opportunity to run a very heavily modified 996TT which had been modified by Techart to give around 550hp
I'm mean to be honest, it was a p1sstake... other than overtaking whole queues of traffic (and I'm really not joking) the corner-out traction given by the 4wd meant that you could just BLAST out of corners with a tiny bit of correction and the PSM would stay resolutely off... It was quicker than ANY current Ferrari (bar Enzo) the Murcielago blah blah - awesome.
The ONLY reason, it couldn't stay is because my licence would NOT survive. The chap who bought it was caught doing 80mph in a 40 limit two days after he bought the car....
This has got me thinking about a GT2 - I'm VERY seriously considering the car because I think the lack of 4wd/PSM will enforce discipline AND make things more interesting.. the added response is soo tempting..
Question 1 - AM I KIDDING MYSELF? WILL I SUBSTITUTE LOSING MY LICENCE WITH LOSING MY LIFE?
Let me re-phrase that - if it was YOU in my position what would happen to you if you went into a GT2? (and I suppose you don't need to have owned either car to be able to help me on that question?).
I've driven a stock GT2 before (too briefly) and it goes and wheelspins like a Ferrari F40. But that's not enough -I need to know more by those who've driven it.
I've trawled the archives here and on Rennlist and I know there have a been a billion TT Vs GT2 threads - this isn't one. I'm not considering a Turbo - I'm considering a GT2 in isolation with some attempt to fill you in on why I want one and whether I'm being stupid....
- How much lighter is a CS spec '04 GT2 than a TT?
- How much traction does it give away to TT in totally dry conditions if any?
- Is it a "straight-line turner"? (that's a car that can spin in a dead straight line in the DRY if the throttle's floored - if the driver isn't wide awake like say an F40 LM).
- Is it true that the 462hp figure is bullsh1t and that the car's are actually running around 500hp from the factory?
- Budget is not something to worry about - I'd want a clubsport - should I bother with the O4 spec car?
Sorry for the relentless ramble.... Please help - any comments appreciated!

Aside from asking if you need an adopted child, all I can say is that I am no Prost, but I drove a GT2 and have never been so feckin scared. I came down a slip road and gave it three quarters throttle onto the M25, and it snaked and tankslapped like you would not believe.
I am still not sure how I saved it (luck, not skill....)
Buy one. But make sure you put a brick behind the accelerator......
Think you need to stop fiddling with exhausts Manu and get out on track more
Take out your need for speed there and you'll feel less need for crazy speeds on the road.
Don't see how even a GT2 can, for example, help you not do 80 in a 40...
Maybe you should go the other way and follow James Hunt's example - get yourself an Austin A40 van. i.e. something that's actually fun to drive at low speeds? To that end, have you considered a much older Porsche?

Long time no speak.
Sounds like you need to have a chat with GuyR and GT2_Henry (both PHers), who run modded GT2CSs as their road cars.
IMHO, unless you were doing lots a trackdays I'd stick with the turbo. In the dry you can safely lose your licence in either of them.
If intending to track a GT2, consider the need for ditching the PCCB as these can be very expensive to replace when they wear out. www.carnewal.com do a steel brake kit using all original porsche parts for about £2k.
BTW I don't think the car in the link is a genuine RS, Porsche never built any GT2 RS?

The GT2 is about 100kg lighter than the Turbo, mainly due to the lack of 4wd
The GT2 engine was recently upgraded to 483 bhp.
This sort of data can be found on the Porsche Web site...

I have a 2001 GT2 CS with Carbon Bonnet, rear wing and also the 550+bhp Ruf engine, all fitted by Ruf in Germany and let me tell you 550 Ruf horses will stampede over 550 Techart Horses........
In the dry it has amazing grip, but in the cold or wet yes it's damn crazy, like requiring corrective opposite-lock when over-taking on A-roads etc sometimes.
An '04 GT2 is 1420kg, an '04 Turbo is 1590kg ie 170kg lighter.........
The suspension on an '04 GT2 is supposed to be better than prior cars, but the extra power is wasted if you are going to tune it.
