What car inspiration needed

Hello,

I'm on the lookout for a fresh commuter car, my commute is 16 miles across country on an A road.

My requirements are:
A budget of £4k
No more than 15 years old
Safe
Be able to fit the three of us and a pushchair
Economical / cheap to run
Interesting!

I've come up with the Swift Sport and Brabus forfour, but there's none about locally to have a look at and they don't seem the most economical, and debated a fabia vrs/cupra tdi but beyond that I'm fresh out of ideas.
