996 creaking steering problem. Advice.
Discussion
If you are a bit of a techie know it all when it comes to the mechanics of a 996, few minutes of your time reading this would be greatly appreciated.
Over a period of a few months i noticed a low grade creaking eminating from the very front of the car. It was only noticeable when going over sleeping policemen or on a bumpy uneven road, there was no noise at rest or whilst going from lock to lock at rest. I took it to a specialist who i've used before and had excellent service. He suggested that it could be sealed joints on the front lower track control arms, so the whole arms were replaced. Unfortunately the problem persisted, so they stripped the front suspension and found both front strut top mountings to be completely perished. Also replaced at this point as the suspension was stripped were both front strut top bearings and both scuttle clips.
The garage was very good and showed me the worn components. Total cost was a very reasonable £678 which included all porsche approved parts.
This was a couple of months ago now, initially the car immediately felt tight and solid. After a couple of weeks i noticed a significant creaking sound (a completely new noise) which appeared to be coming from the steering column region and not front suspension. The creaking is always at start off when turning from lock to lock and appears to go after 30 mins or so of driving (maybe as components warm up?).
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Could it just be something needing greesing? Why don't i go back to the original garage i hear you ask, well i have and the block of industrial units that housed said garage were being demolished!!! I presume that he has moved to larger facilities but i have no idea where!
Cheers

I get this aswell - but only when moving the steering wheel when stationary. In terms of loudness, I can only hear it with the stero off.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has this...

....mine is quite loud and can hear it over the stereo, it only does it when there is about 1/4 turn or more of the wheel. I'm sure it is getting louder. I've checked the power steering fluid levels as low levels in can cause a creak when cold so i've been told.
Anyone else out there with this problem.
Thanks to those of you who have replied....do you have a 996's too or is this problem manifesting in other porsche models?
Cheers

as do I...
OPC have finally admitted there is a problem (after three visits) but don't know what is causing it.
It's being looked at again next week.
I'll let you know if they fix it this time.
....i bet they blame the front strut top bearings as these do fail. Quite well documented failure so i've been informed.

Is that what they have advised on your car?
Mine is a 996 BTW

...i've already had mine replaced when the rest of the original suspension problem was being fixed. Now i have a completely different problem which is manifesting as faulty strut bearings would ie creaking steering going from lock to lock at standstill. My dilemma is that the strut bearings have been replaced and i don't know what else it could be. Maybe i have faulty parts fitted or incorrectly fitted?
The part is fairly inexpensive but fitting takes a bit of time and therefore costs reflect this. This is why mine were replaced as routine whilst the suspension was stripped as it would have been a pain in the ass to restrip it again which is where i currently find myslf. A case of you are damned if you do and you are damned if you don't!!!
