Cider, cider, cider

Thought I'd start a thread to see what those cider drinkers amongst us like.

Ive always liked a pint or 8 of the usual candidates: Westons, Magners etc. but Im keen to get some proper stuff. I always remember a holiday in Devon years ago where the brewers fayre type place had a local cider on tap, you know the stuff that still has half an apple bobbing about in it and could be used to fuel the space shuttle.

Last week I ordered a mixed case of cider from the Bristol Cider shop which is listed as a selection of award winning cider/perry. I;ll be honest it was somewhat of an anit-climax a) there was no perry b) the rest were a bit meh!.

Favourites I think were Perrys vintage cider & Burrow Hill somerset cider.
Newtons Golden bush & Millwhites Rum cask were just like dishwater and the second bottles of each will be binned.

Of the 6 varieties I have one remaining to try so hoping thats a winner.

Anyone any other suggestions?

I know its not a great help for you, but I go on holiday/breaks down to the west country once or twice a year, I really enjoy popping into the local farm shops and supermarkets, pick up a selection of single bottles, sample off of said bottles and then go back and stock up on the ones I like.

Cant remember a single name of any I liked and im long out of stock though, sorry

I'm a bit partial to the dishwater/farmyardy scrumpy style, I prefer it to the fizzy sweet stuff. We have trips to Dorset to stay with my mother in law and often pick up some while we're down there. I find the glass bottles a bit small so usually buy it in the 2 litre packs, usually cheaper too.

My favourites are made by Dorset Nectar and Cider by Rosie, easily found around Bridport and Swanage. West Milton is ok too, Jack Ratt is for tourists!

.. theres a farm somewhere in somerset that does good cider... don't know where it is though!

just stop at random farms with signs out for cider and 9/10 its normally proper cider!

Cider that I drink on tap/bottle is definitely Aspells - lovely and crisp. My favour cider by far is Rattler cider from Healeys Farm cornwall. You can get it on tap down that way - can warp your brain a little, but lovely a smooth and crisp. Both of these are dry ciders. I can't stand sweet ciders. I stopped drinking beer now and just drink these.

A pub near me serves westontons Old Rosie on hand pump. A pint of that and a packet of pork scratchings at the end of the week is bliss.

Thatchers cheddar valley is lovely stuff. Glows in the dark.

Proper ol' homemade is the best I have had. About triple the normal % as well :P

I don't like fruity ciders as they are generally too sweet, but Shelly's Raspberry Cider is superb.

We but 50 ltrs of Chucklehead Cider dry and medium for our summer bbq.... great stuff, everyone is merry.... found it initially at a farmers fair, there was no queue unlike the beer tent,,,,,, mates kids had to lead us home as got totally trolleyed

He's not kidding - it's barrels in a barn, with lots of locals there when I visited. Worth a visit for the experience alone, and if you're there late afternoon then try to catch the starlings roosting on the moors nearby. If you're lucky, you'll see a couple of million birds.
