Having just sold my Porsche 996 Turbo (for what I paid for it 4 years ago!) I may now like to try a Ferrari.

I'd only want to spend £30k on a classic or maybe £40k on a modern. I of course would like red and ideally 4 seats (to keep it a family affair). Running costs are not so importent to me, but good looks, good sound and reliability are. If it was to hold its value then that would be a bonus. It would be a pampered weekend car. Plus, being Midlands based, insight in to sales and serving places that are trusted would be helpful too.

Thanks for any pointers (including to actual cars)

Oula! May I suggest a red porsche?

Good luck with red reliable 4seats 30-40k£ search...actually a Mondial T may fit the bill, I don't see other options really.

Even cabriolet so u can enjoy its music: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/f...

I am afraid a good manual 456 is out of your budget, and red are mega rare...but maybe a good automatic one: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/f...

456 didn't stir anything I'm afraid, but thanks; the Mondial however certainly did! That looks perfect. Why such a good price and why hasn't it sold do you think? Are they considered good cars? Thanks.

How about a lhd 308/328?
Plenty for that price in Europe with a good chance
of also going up in price.

Is there really much room in the back of a Mondial? Nice in blue mind...Second vote for a 612 here.

Stretch to a 612 if you can would be my advice - a lot of car for the money at the moment!

Anything wrong with that 612 on eBay? Yes,I know it's blue...but they look naff in red IMHO.

Mondale are still cheap. QV is a good all rounder. Room in back isn't huge though, perhaps the same as in your 996

I fear that anything in that price range could be a money pit. Getting in to anything decent maybe tough and if you do some big bills might not be far away.

The days of £40k (quality) Ferraris maybe long gone (sadly)

Really doubt 40k£ will stretch to a 612...hence my suggestions of Mondial/456

Also he mentioned 4 seats, which neither 308/328 have.

OP: move on to a 997 turbo...40k£ will even buy you a red one, and I'm sure a 997 allows more room in the back than a 996 (Porsches are getting bigger with each iteration)

996 and 997 chassis and legroom are equal

Thanks for the views. Wonder if anyone who was in a similar position earlier in the year and followed through might have a story to share? If this approach fails then a 306 at around £45k it will be. Driven one on track and extremely nice.

I was going to second the 612 suggestion. I've been driving one for 18 months and it's a grown up way to be a hooligan and shift the wife/kids simultaneously.

I thought that you'd be able to pick up a 2005 car with 25k miles for £50k but there seems to be very little stock around. A private sale might be the way forward as the dealer spread here is large relative to price, say £15k (ie they offer the seller 40 and advertise it at 55). This was the case 6 months ago. So, there's a private deal to done around the mid point where everyone comes out happy. Get it inspected, get a full FSH (which they should almost all have) and bob's your uncle. They are reliable so far as I've heard. I just had my annual service, collected and delivered by a main dealer and all for less than a grand. Can't argue with that.

I was also driving it yesterday in the sun as I cruised down to do a school tour with wife/no1 son; super way to cover 60 miles or so on fast A roads and not such a valuable car you worry about using it.

Mondi for sure. It's relatively simple, only a bit more complex than the 308. 612 is out of budget for initial cost and ongoing support as they get older. A good Mondi will be far cheaper to run at all levels: tax, service, fuel, insurance. Where in the midlands are you?

I never thought I'd see the day that a £40k Ferrari thread would include the Mondial, nothing wrong with the car at all but how long, or rather, not that long ago,it would have been a £10-15k thread if the Mondial was included.
IMHO I think at £40k you are going to be so disappointed when compared to the 996 turbo you have just sold. The only car that would compare would be a 360 Modena in terms of performance. I remember selling my fully sorted 911 and buying a 328 GTS, stunning to look at and a great thing to own but..........the Porsche punches you in the face performance wise and the 328, more of a slap. Just my opinion mind, either way 360 all the way, forget the other two seats and leave the family at home

The Mondial is probably the only choice that fits your wish list, but many have said consider a 997. I'm guessing you're looking for something different to a porker . Have you considered the maser grandtourismo? Great everyday car may fit your needs and will come in sub 40k

There were two Ferrari 2+2 cars sold yesterday at 'Historics at Brooklands'.
A GT4 sold at high teens and a Mondial at low twenties - I've no idea what they were like.

Thanks for taking the time to post; it's all good food for thought. There are a heap of others cars i'd like to own one day (including a: Jensen Interceptor; TR8; Capri 280 et al), but thought I'd get the Ferrari itch scratched next. I think I have narrowed it down to either a Mondial or a 360 (I would still prefer 4 seats though). I guess whichever grabs my attention first will get the nod. I don't need the absolute speed this time around; as has been stated, the 996 did all that. This time it can be about the look of the car. Thanks again; further insights still welcomed. Plus; any trusted dealers in East/West Mids?

Have a look at a 308gt4. Great little drivers car is 2+2 simple to maintain and a great little investment.
