So after having a 24 hour test drive in a Cayman (bog standard), I decided that a Cayman was the car for me. Obviously being a bloke I went straight ahead and ordered a GTS version, however now having driven the GTS today I'm wondering if I shouldn't have saved myself 15k and gone for the standard cayman which itself was a sonderfull car.

Don't get me wrong, the GTS is a great car. however it didn't really feel special enough to justify the extra 15k. I could be a little biased because the Cayman was the first 2 seat sports car I had driven and therefor seemed more special at the time.

So here is my question, if you have owned both is there much of a difference, does the GTS grow on you?

A very fair question

I would say the GTS is a significant improvement over a 2.7 Cayman. Having driven both for a reasonable time I found the standard Cayman less enjoyable

A more difficult choice is between the Cayman S and GTS. To be honest, the S is just as good to drive and there's not a lot to split them in styling.

The decision comes down to the options you want to add to the 'S'. If you want Sport Chrono, Leather interior, 20" wheels, Sports suspension, the extra noisy exhaust etc. then the GTS may be better value. Or you can use the same money to spec other features, PDK, PCM, PCCB .. so many options

Well I've got a deposit down on this http://www.porsche-code.com/PFYTE353 which I'm buying ex demo for around 10% off, it will have around 3000 miles

My cayman build would come to around 53k minus any discount so probably around 48k

I might ask for an extended drive to see if I bond more.

I had a tough choice between the 2.7 and the 3.4 S... the GTS had limited allocation and less discount (new model) compared to the established models!

I thought the 2.7 was great car to drive on the road... certainly rewarding when wringing it's neck, which is where it feels fast and certainly enough power for the public roads! OK it might lack that torque low down in the rev range for effortless performance but perhaps it's not needed when you are doing normal slow driving probably 90% of the time! My thought process was that I would probably enjoy it more of the time for longer as you are not constantly backing off so quickly in faster cars without risking your license!

As I'm hoping to keep the car for a few years, I give in to the thought that, with the 2.7, I would crave for more power some time into ownership (possibly) and wish I ordered the bigger engine where as if I order the 3.4 S would I wish I ordered the 2.7 (probably not unless I was struggling financially)...

I guess the financial difference in outlay between the 2.7 & GTS are greater still so even more money in your back pocket (£15k is a large sum for most people!) As mine is on PCP, it is costing me only £3k more (similar monthly payments) to get the 3.4 S which makes it easier to swallow smile

PS I still think now and again I could have saved the £3k as I'm sure I would have been happy with the 2.7, even though I've not had my car delivered yet! lol

If you can get that spec for £53k I think that's a great bargain!

I've not seen any GTS for <£60k from a Porsche dealership
Very best of luck, I suppose the 'wow' factor of the Cayman depends on what you're used to driving

I swapped be 996 C4 for the Cayman GTS because it was so much better to drive. A strange combination of better comfort and better performance - I was just blown away with the whole package

I think the OP was saying he has been offered the 69k GTS at 10% discount so 62k and if he gets his Cayman for 48k that's the difference of 14/15k. I can't help answer the OP's question because I am going from a 2008 CS to a CGTS for delivery next March and can't wait!!

Yes that's right. The gts is ex demo at around 10% off

53k would be for a Cayman I specced myself before any discount applied and I believe it's quite easy to get around 10%

I think I'll stick with the Cayman gts otherwise there will be that what if which will bug me. Also hopefully I'll be on the gt4 list

I'm going from a 987.2 Cayman PDK to a GTS and it feels worlds apart!

Firstly, I drove a Boxster GTS PDK a few months ago at Silverstone / Porsche Centre and was blown away. I've ordered a Cayman GTS and I was going to go for PDK but found a demo vehicle with a manual, took that out and it felt incredible, so, saved myself 2k and I'm delighted that I've gone for manual instead.

The 'only' thing I can honestly say feels better in the 987 compared to 981 is the steering feel, the 987 hydraulic system was on point, but I'm guessing over time I will become used to the electric set-up in the new car.

Sorry, but haven't owned a GTS to help in your decision process, but I have owned a 2013 Cayman S 3.4 PDK, and loved it. I have driven a 2.7, and its performance is ok, but frustrating in comparison to a 3.4.

One thing that is alarming, is that you can easily spec a GTS with some sensible options up to the price of a used 997 GT3..!

Anyway, if I were you, I'd spec a GTS with sport suspension, bucket seats and PCM, and go and enjoy it..!

I specced my Boxster GTS to £70k and don't regret the investment for an instant because the car feels and looks special inside and out and I will never have that nagging feeling of "I wish I'd ticked that box". Be sure to spec both the GTS interior and exterior packs, they alone make the car really stand out.

But the killer feature of the GTS is the tweaked sports exhaust, which in Sports Plus mode sounds totally insane and giggle inducing. I wish I got a pound for every pedestrian's turned head when I downshift to a cacophony of pops, crackles and rifleshotssmile
