This is doing my head in so over to the masses of PH for help!

I'm having back surgery the week after next on a prolapsed disc in my spine - my surgeon has told me that the best type of car for anyone who has back trouble is one where you can sit with your hips above your knees, which to me straight away says 4x4 / SUV. The first problem I have is I am 6ft 6. The second problem is a do a lot of miles for work (40k since April this year) and get a fuel allowance based on the assumption my car does 50mpg so anything below that and I'm paying for the fuel

To date I have been doing this mileage in a Passat CC which I love, but the driving position does me no favours at all and I really don't want ongoing back problems if I can avoid it!

So, this is my criteria.

1) needs to ideally fulfil the above criteria of being able to sit with my hips above my knees, or at the very least be super comfortable and have lots of head room given my height.
2) needs to do at least 40MPG but as close to 50MPG as possible.
3) have just had 1st child so needs to have decent boot space, although to imagine anything in this category would!

Passat costs me £250 PCM which I don't want to exceed at all ideally. I am leaning towards something like a Rav-4 or Qashqai, but have been told they are surprisingly small and that headroom would still be an issue.

I am also in the process of buying a house to refurb which will involve trips to the tip (back allowing!) so am wondering if something like an older V70 would be better?

I've ruled out the obvious choices such as an Mx5 and a chipped 335d.

Over to you guys!

Volvo immediately springs to mind. Not sure what they're like to live with long term, but I'd imagine something along the lines of an S60 D3 could fit the bill quite well, although I don't know whether these come in at under your £250 pcm figure.
