I have a Rolex that I bought my wife a few years ago, it is diamonds encrusted but this is an aftermarket mod.
I need a service agent as the back need replacement due to a past very dodgy service guy who ruined it.
The watch is superb but hasn't been worn for a couple of years so service and rear case at a reliable place is what I'm after.

Any ideas ?

Service isn't a problem - there are plenty of very reliable independents out there wo can handle them.

Case back may be a big problem. The chance of getting it replaced outside the official channels is virtually nil.

But what's been done to it? Assuming it still fits the case and screws down ok, there's a pretty good chance of refinishing what's on there to a reasonable standard - any chance of a photo?

If Joe cant repair it then theres a sporting chance that you will be able to buy either a used back, or a complete case.

Ill get a photo up later but to let you know, the guy CUT lines into the backing to open it, he obviously didn't have a right tool and wrecked the back. I don't see any way of repairing this.

Relatively straightforward: micro-welding. The fellow who does it likes to service the watches too though, I believe, which suits him, but not us.

Here are the pics. I actually have a few watches needing servicing also but would like to build a relationship with a service agent or repairer going forward so I am able to get them done when needed.

Im in a similar position. Im confident that I have found someone (Joe/Variomatic here) but I don't know where to start. Since making a list I have bought several more watches / stopwatches which all need a service at a minimum, and I have less idea now than when I started.

I also don't have the rolex logbook for the watch either as the guy who did this work didn't give it back and they are no longer there. I doubt rolex will re-issue due to the changes of the watch so I guess this watch has zero value any more.

That's criminal!!!

Depending on how deep they are (hard to tell from a photo) it may be possible to skim and polish them out. That would obviously thin the back a little because you have to take metal from all over to keep the profile right but it's surprising how much can be safely removed, even if it's just to keep it servicable until a replcement can be found.

The alternative, as GC8 says, would be to weld and refinish but there's slightly more risk (lots of heat into a thin, shaped and threaded part can give distortion) and I don't know anyone off the top of my head with suitable facilities, although they will be out there!

There is a fellow, with a foreign Christian name from memory, but I cant remember it off the top of my had. I am confident that someone reading this will know who I mean though, and comment.

Joe can mend it, service it and polish it. For more substantial case repairs youll need to Google micro-welding (also called laser welding IIRC). There will be plenty of results on Rolex forums, even if you cant get a personal recommendation from here.

GC8 has it about right - repair / servicing and cleaning up what's there are o problem, but my welding ability stops at car body panels during hobby time, and you don't want welds like that on your watch case laugh

I wonder if Rocco (Watchworks) could do the caseback – he's the micro-weld go to guy on TZ-UK, and he has a lapping machine, purchased from the RSC in London, iirc.

I can't suggest myself, but hopefully someone else will be along shortly to do that for me smile

From the case back pov, if you did end up sending it this way I'm happy to take a look at it on a no-win-no-fee basis. The same as normal repair quotes, if I'm not happy that I can improve it a lot then I don't charge for looking and return at my cost, so you're only out by the postage here.

I deleted it, instead of editing, so had to repost it – yours snuck in just before mine.
