I got word yesterday, a guy at work with an '06 997 turbo, just ticked over 50k & serviced on the dot has run into a rather serious problem.

The car developed a significant resonant rattle at 2.5-3k revs, not rhythmic as in a wonky bearing or the like, but something that appeared at those revs & went again above or below that, I was there when we tested the revs & it sounded like a bolt rattling around.

That afternoon, he opted to drop the car into a well known independent for them to look at & en route, the car locked up, dash lit up & engine refused to turn over, completely seized. It rolls in neutral, but that's all.

It was trailered to the garage & they'll open it up in the morning. This is literally all I know from a quick phone call yesterday, so in the absence of hard facts, what does the speculative side of the community say? At first glance, totally borked appears to be the situation, right?

Also, really asking for a friend, mine's a Cayman & it's just fine smile

Must admit, I thought something big & fundamental. Word from the garage this morning is they've managed to turn it over & start it to idle, but the rattle is present at all engine speeds. They mentioned a possible lunched oil pump, but it doesn't explain the lock up he experienced. More news when I get it.

Could just be something simple like oil pump as mentioned by garage or bent turbo actuator rod or maybe a faulty solenoid (starter motor). The 997.1 turbo engines are generally as tough as old boots (although I managed to blow one up hehe)

It could have suffered a partial seizure?

For anyone interested, the initial diagnosis is IMS failure. They've had the oil pan off & there is lots of metal around it seems. Quoted £24k for a factory exchange engine, garage want £3k just to remove & strip the engine for full diagnosis.

I think he's going to ring round, see what he can find. 24k = write off on a car worth 30-35, but there's always other options.

If it is IMS, then that explains how it locked up in gear, it remains to be seen how much damage has been done. He said at the time, he was doing about 15mph in 2nd which may or may not mitigate in his favour, dunno yet obviously.

An IMS failure on a Mezger engine is very rare. Its has plain bearings that are pressure fed with oil as opposed to the M96/97 grease packed sealed unit which of course is a notoriously weak design.

Has it been highly tuned in the past?

I believe so, yes. Couldn't tell you the numbers, but I know it was mapped.
