Underwater Video
Discussion
I want to use a video camera on a stick (GoPro or similar) to film underwater in small rivers and ponds without actually entering the water myself. The reason being that I fish and want to get a look into some of the tight spots I fish and see what is going on beneath the surface. Picture quality is not too important as I'm not trying to produce art, I just want to see where the fish are.
My question is, with a GoPro-type camera, is it possible to live stream the video to an android smart phone so that I can actually see what is going on underwater in real time or do I just need to wait until I get home to see what I have captured on 'film'?

Some of the newer gopros can stream the footage by wifi to a smart phone or tablet, for live video. I regularly use a go pro 3 black for work - I find the wifi has a bit of an annoying lag, but i gather they've fixed this with the 3+ and the 4.
Not sure how well wifi will stream when underwater though!

most of the newer gopros (except the base model hero), the Sj4000(wifi), the drift range and the sony action cameras all have apps to live view your footage on an ios or andriod device. Shallow water shouldn't pose to many problems especially if you're only a poles length away.
The sony and the Drift cameras are waterproof without extra housings. but the Gopro and the SJ come with the waterproof housings so if audio isn't an issue, then there's no problem.
The hero4 silver, some of the drift cameras and the Sj400 all have tiny screens so you can view recorded footage that way as well. You can buy accessory screens for the sony and other gopros.
So realistically you can pay your money and take your choice of any of the current action cameras. Your problem will be how much light there is and how much you disturb the silt and detritus. The easiest option would be to tape a waterproof LED torch to the end of your pole.

I'm thinking of buying one of these - no live feed, unfortunately, but fairly cheap at about £120 and evidently good battery life and image quality.
Pretty unforgiveable to break off on a pike like that, and very lucky for them to get their camera back and the pike to get the first trace removed, but fascinating footage all the same;

So I got a base model Hero for Christmas and it has been a mixed blessing.
On the one hand it takes a lovely video underwater and I am going to be able to have some real fun with it.
On the other hand it has a number of very frustrating habits. Several times it has switched itself off whilst underwater and proved impossible to turn back on. At first I assumed that this was due to cold as I was filming in a river with ice in the margins but no amount of warming it up would bring it back to life. The only thing that worked was to plug it back into the laptop whereupon it works straight away. This has happened several times and as I don't take a laptop to the waterside it has meant several wasted trips.
The second frustrating thing is that it simply doesn't save every video I take. I press record, dip the camera in the water for a minute or two then remove and press stop, hear the beep, move to the next location a few feet away and press record again, hear the beep, rinse and repeat a few times.
About 70% of the time it works and I get back home excited to see the footage I've taken and some of it is just not there.
To confirm, there is no water getting in, the battery is fully charged and I'm using the correct software and latest release.
What do we think? Have I got a dud that needs to be returned to the shop?

If you want to see what's underwater in real time just get something like this :
