Cookies problem, losing new posts

For some reason both my laptop and desktop PC are losing new posts whilst I am online, it seems to think I have logged out even though I haven't and posts that were new are now old (read).
I used to be able to log out, maybe for an hour or so and still have the previous unread posts highlighted as unread when I logged back on.
Is there something updating in the background?
